X220 SSD Upgrade OS & Driver Optimization

2012-12-18, 12:34 PM

Hello All,

I've ordered Samsung 840 250GB SSD and 16+ Slice Battery. I've been through most of the posts detailing the precautions and procedures while upgrading. Most of them are old posts.

I just want to know if anything has changed? Do you recommend using the recovery disks on SSD? Or a fresh installation of OS, drivers and applications? If so, what parameters should I use to format the SSD?

I prefer installing from scratch. In that case what are the bare minimum drivers and utilities I shall install? I know it's time consuming but it's OK with me. Running lenovo update installs drivers and their software and lots of other utilities that I will never use.

Do I need to take precaution while using the Slice battery?

Please share your experience and expertise in this matter.

Thanking you,

Shereef

Installing from scratch is best and if you intend to install Win7 or Win8 then everything will be optimized automatically for you as both operating systems support ssd.

That install should get you most drivers as well. You'll just need to install TSVU to keep your drivers updated.

Thank You ceb,

I would prefer to start from scratch too. However, I don't want to use thinkpad update services. That utility installs not only drivers but also driver management utilities and other stuff that I don't need. For example, broadband activation tools, Map, etc... I usually extract driver packages and intergate only the drivers into Windows image (WIM) file using deployment tools. I don't like imaging or cloning tools though I hear that they have improved over the last few years.

I would appreciate if any serious system tweakers out there know exactly what drivers and utility software are absolute necessary; that's what I will install. Is there anyway I can use the Windows 7 key of laptop with my new install DVD? The current copy of my Windows 7 is volume license. Will that work with this key?

Thanking you

Shereef

Hello,

When I installed a SSD in my X220, I just used the recovery media to load the operating system.  No problems occurred installing to the SSD, and I was able then able to disable or remove the various programs I did not use.

Thw Windows install will install any drivers that are required for system operation. I install the Thinkpad updater to allow me to see any new drivers. It allows you to pick which updates to download and install but the thinkpad updater certainly isn't required.

The exact drivers you need depends on your configuration but windows will install the required ones.

If you are installing the same Win7 that you have a volume license for - and are installing it within the requirements of your license - then it'll work fine.

Your Win 7 license key won't work for a different version of Win 7 or for Win 8 - you knew that but others might not.

What's even odder is that the "solution" didn't really address the question.
