Re: X220 cpu throttling problem

2011-06-23, 12:12 PM

The price has been lower before actually--you just have to know where to look.

It's a great laptop in many ways; they just need to solve this power regulation issue somehow (which, I'll say it again, is probably the exact same cause of the touchpad jumpiness with the UltraSlim adapter) and things will be much peachier.

The only other annoyance is Intel's graphics drivers switching the refresh rate to 50Hz when the AC is unplugged.  I wish there was some way to remove 50Hz from the list of compatible resolutions... but I suppose this is an issue for another thread.

I eagerly await a solution...

Re: X220 cpu throttling problem

I really regret that I purchased this computer, which works slower than my 3-year-old laptop. Is this a problem that can be solved by a BIOS update or a patch, or should I get rid of this computer?

Even on battery with highest performance settings, the throttling problem still exists.. With or without the 65W adapter, the speed still remains at 800 MHz.. only happen to jump to 3.2GHz once or twice and goes back to 800 MHz.. 65W adapter (FRU P/N 42T4417 & 42T4416)

I have the same situation. The throttling problem is still there without the power adaptor as well. It is so annoying to have several problems from such a nice laptop: Throttling, ghosting in the screen, annoying fine noise, mSATA problems with usb3 etc. It is unbelievable that they still sell these products...

what program are you guys using for your cpu stats? cpu-z or hwinfo? You should use hwinfo. Some users have reported that cpu-z does not get accurate readings in sb processors.

If you using hwinfo and ur battery settings are on max turbo/max performance and you are getting throttled to 800mhz, then who knows whats going on. I didnt think anyone was getting throttled on battery power.

To me, it only happens when using the 65w ac adapter. It does not happen at any other time. When I have max turbo/max performance setting, the proc always runs at full speed either on battery or with the 90w ac adapter.

If you read page 144 of the owners thread at the notebookreview forum, there is a user that even on max turbo/max performance setting, his x220 idles at 800mhz (he did say he was using cpu-z, dont know if that was why though). Also, I think that user has an i5 and not the i7. On my x220, on max turbo/max performance, it always runs at max speed even when idle.

UPDATE: The user just confirmed that the iasue was with cpu-z getting inaccurate cpu speed readings. After using hwinfo, everything was fine with the correct speed reading when on max turbo/max performance.

When testing, I suggest to everyone to use hwinfo to get the cpu readings, and not cpu-z since it does not work correctly on sb processors.

Ok, it seems to me that Lenovo is not taking this issue seriously.

Let's ask the Lenovo people which online magazine do they prefer to do a free advertisement for them for selling defective units and not fixing the problem.

LENOVO PEOPLE DID YOU HEAR THIS?

der72, you need to seriously calm down. They are working on the issue. You have not contributed one useful piece of information to this discussion. They know you're not happy. You've made that point in every one of your 7 posts so far, in which you have provided nothing of substance. Posting how annoyed you are 3 times a day is not going to fix anything.

Guys I appreciate all the useful comments here. I can tell you that this issue has high focus within Lenovo. I've seen some of the progress but it's not complete yet. Making changes in BIOS must be done with care so this is taking time and I completely understand your frustration. I'd love to have this fixed as quickly as possible just as much as you.

We are working with a couple community members as well to ensure we have their input. We've also been using comments within this thread to ensure we have the test cases covered so I want to thank those that put in the time to write them up.

Ken,
Why don't you setup a site I mentioned above where people can submit their Serial number and the additional information and tests they done with an email address (so your engineers can have a "decent sample")?

Second, are you 100% sure that bios fix will solve all the problems?

If not then stop selling defective units.

@ dtp7
Let me give you a piece of advise.
1) You value your customer
2) You do not lie to your customer
3) You do not sell defective products
4) You take responsibility for your actions
5) LEARN TO READ! and read that 99% of my questions were not addressed by the Lenovo team.

Enjoy the rest of your day!
