Re: X220 CPU throttling problem

The term "gaming laptop" refers to a particular market segment aimed at gaming enthusiasts. No laptop with only Intel HD graphics falls into that category. Just because the X220 (or other laptop) can run game applications doesn't make it a gaming laptop.

Even if this is not a marketing perversion called "gaming laptop" it doesn't means that you can't enjoy games with x220 with comfortable enough graphics settings and comfortable frame rates. And there is a dramatic diffirence between 1st generation of Intel HD and 2nd generation of this chip.

Actually x220 really surprised me with performance in games. Its amazing. I only want solution for throttling issue.

[SNIP] Right now im very happy because the text above helped me a lot to gain more FPS in many games. 25-50% wasnt a lie. JNavas, you rely on facts and I like that, but in this case Bender957 was right. It may depend on what Driver you had installed before, in my case it was the newest Lenovo driver. [SNIP] In fact I gained like +20 FPS which is quite a lot. [SNIP] Graphics just rised from 6,1 to 6,2 . That migth just be a "bug" or tolerance from windows performance index (or how it was named in english ;) )

- Score just did not change a lot, but performance in games inproved a lot :)

The minor increase in WEI Gaming Graphics from 6.1 to 6.2, with significant improvement in some (not all) games, is in fact just what I wrote. That may make non-Lenovo driver hassles worth it for you, but not for me.

The X220 can be used for less demanding games, but is by no stretch of the imagination a "gaming laptop":

                                                    3DMark 03 - Standard 1024x768      3DMark 05 - Standard 1024x768

Intel HD 3000 (X220)                                         8900                                                6715

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M *                         57014                                              26329

* Alienware M17x R3 GTX 580M i7-2820QM   ["gaming laptop"]

"The glossy screen, the keyboard ghosting, the GPU throttling on battery power, and the high price tag are its main flaws."

[Current Hard Disk score] 7,4
Hard Disk score was some time at 7,8 ( ;D ) due to my OCZ Vertex 2 160GB SSD. (lenovo uses samsung?)

Performance of many SSD drives (including OCZ Vertex 2) declines over time, expecially if you don't TRIM regularly.

FWIW, my new 80GB Intel 310 mSATA SSD currently has 7.7 WEI. I use the Intel SSD Toolbox to TRIM it weekly.

I returned my defective X220 about six weeks ago and after waiting a while to see if I could order a "works-as-advertised" replacement X220 I finally gave up and got  a 13" Apple Air.  After 40 years as a PC and IBM-Lenovo guy I am pleased.

Ok, so the X series (X220 I7, intel SSD) is "NOT" a gaming laptop!  I run multiple Virtual Machines for development without any throttling and this is on both battery (my modified power setting) and AC (standard 90 watt charger) both with Turbo (the battery handles my air time).  Whoever thought an ultraportable was a gaming machine may have been smoking an illegal subsance (well U.S.)!

I likewise use mine for demanding work without throttling even on the standard 65W adapter (with battery installed).

I have an Intel 320, with Intel SSD Toolbox installed and scheduled to TRIM weekly, but Intel's own documentation says it is really unnecessary for Windows 7:

Note: If your computer uses Microsoft* Windows* 7 and the standard Microsoft AHCI driver (the default setup for normal configurations without RAID), the Intel SSD Optimizer works; however, you do not need to use the Intel SSD Optimizer because Windows 7 implements the Trim functionality natively.

Also the WEI for hard drive only measures transfer rate and I'd imagine that TRIM doesn't have a large effect for that parameter.

@All,

There will be a BIOS which the team be releasing to fix this issue, estimated end of August if all no issues are found during testing stage.

1. Performance of many SSD drives declines over time even with Windows 7.

2. Windows 7 TRIM only works if the SSD properly identifies itself.

3. I have found Intel TRIM to help even on Windows 7.

4. TRIM primarily affects write performance, but can affect garbage collection performance as well.

For more information on TRIM, click here.

That's great news JameZ! Looking forward to the update.

Forgot to add, I installed the Intel HD 2462 driver that Bender posted and indeed, my FPS went up. Playability definitely got better! So far, no issues. I've tried Photoshop, various games and just normal windows browsing (about 40 tabs in 3 windows on Firefox 5 with Flash, Silverlight [Netflix], all running...) THANKS BENDER!!

I reran WEI and my scores for graphics haven't changed but interestingly my WEI Memory score went from 5.6 to 5.9. I should be getting my my 2nd 4gb SODIMM in today so I'll re-rerun WEI once I install that and see if I get a little more of a increase. I gotta say, so far, I'm happy with the X220 except for the Trackpad...although I really do so wish they would have stuffed these internals (and a higher resolution IPS display into a X301...I really miss having that DVD drive/burner)
