X220 crashes after video driver

2013-01-22, 21:16 PM

I have installed a 64GB Transcend mSATA and installed Windows 7 64bit from a DVD (using the DVD drive on the base pad). Windows installs fine, the problem seems to occur when I try to update the video driver. The file that seems to be causing me the trouble is the 'Intel HD Graphics Driver (Integrated) for Windows 7 (64-bit)'. However I try to install, it goes smoothly, then asks to restart. After that, I get to the Windows loading icon, but then it goes to bluescreen. Other drivers seem to install OK. Any help would be most gratefully recieved.

Hello,

Check with Transcend to see if the latest firmware is installed in your SSD, then try installing all of the available updates for the system from Lenovo except the video driver and then from Microsoft via Windows Update, which may offer a different driver.  Does that make any difference?

Hello,

Just to verify, you are installing the video driver via the ThinkVantage System Update program, correct?

Thanks for asking Aryeh. Yes I have used the IBM system update software. I have also tried downloading just that file and running it, but the results are the same each time. I even used a 3rd party driver update program, but exactly the same thing happened.

Best wishes,

Geddes

You can also turn off Windows automatic driver updates (or just turn off your internet connection), uninstall your current driver and then install the new driver.  For whatever reason, the current drive might be conflicting with the new driver.   I have a X220 and W8 clean install but did not experience this.  I did have another driver issue where I finally uninstalled the driver that was there by default and then installed a new driver and it worked.  Might for you in this case.

Good luck!

Thanks very much Aryeh - I followed your advice and it seems to be working OK now. I think the important thing was letting W7 install service pack one before trying to install the video driver. Weird problem.

Thanks again for your help - very kind of you!

Thanks for your reply Kent - I have got it working now, but your advice could well be useful in the future.

Best wishes.
