This issue isn't going to be fixed by anything other than a higher quality fan. Has anyone found any replacements fans that will fit? I'm willing to buy one and test the fan noise.

Agreed.  Once we have some models that will fit, I'm willing to replace mine (and put better/better applied thermal paste on) and test it out.

So it's been 3 weeks with no news.

I've already returned my X220 for a refund last week and will not be buying a Lenovo product ever again.

Dear ALL

I got my blackbeauty today...First worry on my mind was the noise issue..I see the fan is throwing high air at high velocity and I hear little noise when I bring is closer to my ear level or type of noise is as if fan speed is slightly higher and running at one speed constantly...Now I can not understand or explain further..Let me trying in a very quite room tonight and will check again.

To be honest I am already in love with the machine keyboard. is too nice.

Off the topic I feel the sound level is much lower any suggestions..?

Thanks

Engineering are testing on a new BIOS for this issue and it looks good.

Will update when I have a release date.

PLEASE... give us a release date or beta download soon. The x220 is very nice in almost every way but the fan whining and revving is a show stopper... I have to use my old laptop now until this is fixed. This is my first lenovo laptop ever and I hope I don't have to return it as my last.

@mjrpes: A BIOS update cannot fix a mechanical problem. The whining fan is a mechanical problem! The fan will whine at exactly the same RPM after the BIOS update as before, but Lenovo might decide to tolerate higher CPU temperatures which will make the fan run at lower speeds.

Please keep us up to date. This "fan issue" is the only thing stopping me from upgrading my x200s to a x220 with i7 and IPS panel. So lenovo has it in their own hands if the get my money ;)

Jamez, thats hopeful and thanks for the update. Any chance this bios update will seek to address the throttling issue on the i7s?

Petrov.
