Betreff: X220 - fan constantly on / revving up and down

2011-06-02, 11:10 AM

Has it been established if the pulsing issue is unique to i5 or i3 models or not? I have an i7 x220 (until tomorrow), and the fan whines, but I've not noticed any pulsing...?

Petrov.

Many users of i3 and i5 are reporting pulsing problem. It is hardly noticeable, but in the night, in quiet room, yes-it is there.  This issue is very annoying. If i never used thinkpad i wouldn´t be concerned. But, i had x200t, t60, t61, r400, r500 and some other models - never had this issue. So, now i am piss... because - regardless what lenovo says - this is one big step back for them. And they will lost many customers with ignoring this problem and saying that this can only hear some very sensitive ear...

I've returned my x220 i5 to the retailer. The whining was too annyoing and I couldn't work at all. It's a pity, but I still hope that Lenovo will find a solution.

@JameZ

Could you please post the link to the recommended BIOS update again? Maybe you could do the same each time referring to it: this would help people stumbling over this thread. Thanks!

What's the recommended way doing this update for non-windows users? I'm a bit surprised Lenovo doesn't provide an USB image (afaik) for a notebook shipping without a drive. Isn't this sold as a "professional", "Linux certified" device?

Vickoxy,

I agree. I sought out a ThinkPad because they are supposedly the best when it comes to durability, keyboards and working like they are supposed to. I went out of my way and spent an extra 300 bucks when I was originally eying a HP Envy 14. The 14 had a similiar processor (not sandy bridge though) and discrete graphics.

I wanted a little more portability for my schooling and travel plu I hate gloss screens.

It would be terrible if my first ThinkPad experience is a bad one and turns me off of the whole brand...

I checked the X220 "Download Drivers and Software" web page today and I noticed that the version of the BIOS is 1.11

It has been 1.15 for the last three weeks...

JameZ or others working from Lenovo,

why did Lenovo remove version 1.15 from the official "Download Drivers and Software" web page?

What is happening with version 1.16?

Thanks!

After hearing about the fan whine issues on the x220, I put off buying one.

I thought maybe I could save up a little more and settle for the w520 instead.

After a little searching, it seems to be a problem on that model too. This is quite a shame, Lenovo. I guess I'll end up taking my business elsewhere. Sorry if this has already been covered.

The problem exists also on the T420s: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T420s-Fan-noise-Issue/td-p/443569

Interesting fan repair experience (if you are thinking to send your x220 back for repairing the fan): http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Lenovo-T420-Fan-quot-Repair-quot-Nightmare/m-p/445905
