Re: X220 - fan constantly on / revving up and down

I doubt that all of the fan problems can be solved by BIOS update. I suppose it is neccessary to change the fan.

I am really a little bit mad about the whining fan. I don't understang why it is so hard for Lenovo to solve the issue.

to solve the problem about the "whining" fan, you surely need to replace the existing one! Because there is this noise around 2,5k rpm. It´s a mechanical issue.

But I hope they can solve the "pulsing" issue...since its electronical related.

The X220 fan was driving me crazy.  But, I just installed Bios 1.16, which has DRAMATICALLY reduced the fan noise.  I recommend it highly.

As long as you don't do anything that requires the fan to spin up over 2k RPM all is well.

does anyone know if there is a suitable replacement fan?  I haven't read that anyone has tried this yet, seems like the obvious thing to do, but I'm no techie, so I don't know how interchangeable these parts are.

I just spoke with a Lenovo sales agent and he was not aware of the problem.  How can that be given the passion exhibited on this forum?  he says non of his customers have complained or returned their units.  I'm baffled.

Lenovo, I'm waiting to purchase this unit until after I can be assured the problem has be resolved, hopefully in a timely manner.  otherwise, I'm going elsewhere...

Funny. Talked to a Lenovo tech person earlier today and she told me the whining issue is just a feature of Sandy Bridge processors.. Maybe if the whining is stable but I doubt any pulsing is 'normal'.

@Yangorang

BS? Not really. Google knows something about these whinging Sandies. It's not the first time when there's an error in Intel's CPUs.

Like I said, I believe the whining could be a feature but not with that pulsing sound.
