Based on previous posts, it is also unknown if the replacement parts will solve the problem.

it was mentioned in the conversation and he was adamant  it would be the way to progress with this.

I’m also thinking (and hoping) that since they are waiting for replacement parts  to come in stock from delta electronics (the fan manufacturer) I may be in luck as it could have just been a bad batch, made a slight tweak in the design or even a change in manufacturing processes.

> 3.) you should really update to 1.16 or 1.17!

Did it, upgraded to 1.17. Now the high frequency component of the fan (?) definitly exhibits the pulsing behaviour. I am inclinded to consider this a net deterioration compared to 1.12 (on the asset-side: the high-pitched noise starts to kick in a bit later with 1.17 than with 1.12) and I don't even know how to downgrade to the factory BIOS version (1.12), as it is missing from the download page (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-77150).

Nevertheless, I started to doubt whether this high-pitched noise is really from the fan, because the air-flow seems to be quite steady despite the pulsing. (Or else the air-flow has enough inertia to follow the pulsing...) But the pulsing seems to be definitely linked to the processor getting some load, as on a basically idle system the pulsing appears to be absent (with the high-pitched noise present).

It is from the fan and it is an old recurring problem: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_fan_noise

Hi,

Bios 1.16 - http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8duj06us.exe

                  http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8duj06us.txt

Bios 1.12 - http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8duj04us.exe

                  http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8duj04us.txt

I don't know if you can downgrade, but there are the right Bios versions. You must only change the last number to get a higher or lower bios version.

Here's the BIOS for version 1.12:

http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8duj04us.exe

And yes, you can downgrade the BIOS without any problems (other than the fact that the old BIOS problems might show itself), as I have tested.

Can someone confirm that BIOS 1.12 does not have the 5 secs pulsing noise?

Please do the test at RPM > 3000. At lower RPM its perception becomes too subjective.

Thanks!

I was using BIOS 1.12 for over a month (as originally shipped) and 1.17 for the past few days. I have no pulsing noise with either BIOS version, and my fan is very quiet at any speed. For those of you having the problem, I would conclude that it is caused by something else besides the BIOS.

> Can someone confirm that BIOS 1.12 does not have the 5 secs pulsing noise?

I tested with 1.12, 1.15 and 1.17.

With 1.17, there is distinct periodic "jerk-up" of the high frequency sound, meaning that about every 5 second the high frequency sound gets significantly more intensive for a fraction of a second.

With 1.12 and 1.15, the high frequency sound is relatively steady with some intermittent "holes". So instead of gaining intensity, I have the impression that it actually loses instensity for a fraction of a second. Sometimes I have the impression that the high frequency sound gradually loses intensitiy and goes upward again following a saw-edge pattern. The periodic nature is not clearly identifiable (as opposed to 1.17). A relatively rare "jerk-up" can also be heard, nevertheless.

I know this is very subjective, but I am more comfortable overall with the earlier versions.

Thanks to all who helped me with getting BIOS version 1.12 .

I was astonished to learn the extent of the pulsing problem. Given that it has been present with so many models for so long, I am very sceptical regarding the prospect of an effective solution by the vendor.
