Re: X220 - fan constantly on / revving up and down

Agreed. I it doesn't appear to be a BIOS problem. Tweakings in the BIOS are just a (rather ineffective) bandage over the real problem (which may or may not be with the fan).

I would be surprised if the fan was instantly responding to changes in the CPU speed to produce a fan surging noise; on other Thinkpads I noticed that the fan speed depended on the temperature and lagged CPU activitiy by several seconds. (This was a problem on my T61 because the CPU would heat up very rapidly before the fan could spin up.)

Since you're seeing regular CPU surging, can you do an experiement? Open the Thinkvantage power manager and set the system speed to "Low" (in the advanced settings). On my system, this locks the CPU at 800 Mhz. If the CPU surging was causing your peridoic fan noise, this would eliminate your noise completely.

Jmstuckman,

Great idea. I just tested you suggestion and set the Power Manager to Low for the CPU. With the CPU locked at 800 MHz, the CPU surges were gone (as checked in HWinfo64 Summary mode). However, the fan surging continued every few seconds. So it appears to be fan-based after all, and not CPU-surge-induced fan surging.

Fan pulsing seems to be solved on the T520 with a beta BIOS: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T520-fan-plusing-noise-every-5-seconds/td-p/414303/page/8

Maybe the same changes will be implemented for the X220??

That would be fantastic. Let's hope the test was done at all RPMs, not only 2000.

Re: X220 - fan constantly on / revving up and down

Hi poor pulsing fan-X220-owners, just joined this community after following this thread.

I had almost decided to buy a X220 before I found this, it seemed like the perfect notebook, but with these issues I'm not so eager to get one anymore!

Someone suggested that the ones with i3-2310m might not have the throttling problem.

But are the pulsing, whining et c noise problems found in the 2310m version too?

I read through most of the posts but don't remember if there were any 2310m:s in there.

Was very satisfied with my last Lenovo so all this was surprising to hear.

Re: X220 - fan constantly on / revving up and down

Hello

I got my 220 today.

Everything is fantastic but when fan begin to accelerate just a little (windows boot, youtube video.. or just idling), the fan make a annoying high pitched noise.

like "WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII" (a bit like a mosquito)

I have too the "pulsing issue". It is like IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIUUUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIUUUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIUU

But the real problem for me is not the pulsing but the noise.

Unfortunately i don't think the high pitched noise can be software corrected.

Hope lenovo can tell us when fixed fan will be available (even selling it as a spare part because returning a laptop is a bit annoying)

I just got a chance to use my new x220 i5 after receiving it a couple weeks ago. I have the same fan problem that everyone else in this thread seems to have :(  I was running 1.16, but after I flashed 1.17 I think the pulsing got worse.

I'm surprised lenovo has let this probelm persist for so long

I have the same issues with my T420s since May 2011.

I really regret putting my money into lenovos basket. seems they

took it and let oua all standing in the rain.

I assume the only reaction will be for all customers who are affectet:

WADWorks As Designed

then we can all put our units into ebay or better send them back to

lenovo

nice "sell and forget" strategy. but this will surely harm their busines in the

long run. there is good competition out there !

people already put they dissapointed videoreviews on youtube

Get real folks. This quote is directly from a hands-on review of the very expensive new Sony Vaio Z:

" ... warm temperatures won’t bother you here, but the fan noise may — during heavy usage times  it sounded like there was small spaceship getting ready for take off inside the center of the system ... I found it annoying."
