Re: X220 - fan constantly on / revving up and down

2011-07-16, 14:42 PM

I have installed TPFancontrol to check and like most of you, the high pitched sound become audible and annoying from ~2600RPM+ (playing a video, launching some software is enough to make it happend). Continuous 30% CPU utilization is enough, no need to make stress test for me.

If i don't chose "reduce the noise dynamically", i have the whine even at idle most of the time !

I suppose that without the high pitched noise, the "pulsing" of the fan would be barely noticeable and not a critical issue ?

Is lenovo looking into the fan (hardware) issue ? Because even if the pulsing is corrected or attenuated by a new bios, the constant high pitched noise will still be annoying anyway.

If you can not reproduce the problem, just get a new X220 from the factory and i think you will get the whine sound like everyone else.

Thank you

Gator - In providing this article, do you mean to imply that the whine issue might be prevalent among Sandy Bridge laptops, not just those made by Lenovo?  Or that there's one particular fan vendor supplying lousy fans to various computer manufacturers?

Or that ultralight laptops with powerful processors may be very difficult to cool.

This is from anoher review of the Vaio Z.  Perhaps the designers of the most powerful new ultralights got out ahead of the engineers.  "Unfortunately, the VAIO Z's fan got pretty loud at times, especially when under a heavy workload. While installing a demo of the Homefront game with the Power Media Dock connected, the laptop sounded it like it was getting ready for takeoff."

Full disclosure: I have placed a pre-order for a Vaio Z for mid August delivery.  I 'll have a 30 day window to return it for any reason, no restocking fee.  A buyer is waiting for my beloved W700, which is too big and heavy for my current mode of use.

I can live with a bit of noise when pushing a laptop. However, noise is about more than just measuring volume. While some ordinary "loudness" is fine, I can see repetitive pulsing being obnoxious and certain frequencies (eg a high pitched whine) also being objectionable... especially if other customers with the same model do not experience these issues. So to say that most small laptops are "loud" and so is the x220 may be true, but that doesn't mean the X220 doesn't have an issue with the quality of the noise.

The difficulty in assessing the less-obvious noise issues is that each of us has a different tolerance of noise and has a differing view of what is intrusive noise, tolerable noise, intolerable noise.   I wear hearing aids and when I remove them the world becomes a "softer, quieter place".    :-)

I agree that noise is subjective, though there are probably some issues that would drive a lot of people nuts. For my part, potential fan pulsing and whining are the main issues that are keeping me from buying an x220 today.

I've reluctantly concluded that with IBM gone, Lenovo's weak engineering staff can't perform effective hardware and software beta tests and that Lenovo executives haven't a clue how to work with free market consumers.

After decades of owning many IBM Thinkpads and one excellent Lenovo W700 I am done with Lenovo products until it can figure out how to run a computer business.

GatorBob, I completely agree with you. I'm still waiting for my replacement device to arrive. I have now been without a computer for over a month and a half. Oh I wish IBM would come back...

I agree that quality and customer service has suffered since the days of IBM. However... consider why IBM left the business. It wasn't profitable! It's a tough business to be in, with slim profit margins and cost cutting at every opportunity. Not making excuses for Lenovo, but if you go down the list -- Dell, HP, Sony, etc., everybody is in the same situation. I hate say it, but at the moment Apple has the best reputation for quality hardware.
