Re: X220 - fan constantly on / revving up and down

2011-07-22, 17:28 PM

Well...I went on the Lenovo website, clicked "Contact", found the US support line, called in with my laptop information, and got a friendly Lenovo tech support guy. He had me check the most recent updates (nothing to download) and then run the quick hardware test. The tech was using screen sharing, so I made sure he copied the URL for this forum thread into the case history. He is shipping a box to me on Monday, I'll put the PC in it and take it to the UPS Store on Monday afternoon before the truck goes out at 5 pm (hopefully before then, at least!), and it will go out in the mail. The tech said I can keep my hard drive, which I think I'll do so that they don't put just update Power Manager and send it back to me. :)  He said it will take two or three days if they have the fans in stock, and 5 to 7 if not. (I asked him to write down in the case history that the fan models which are not known to have the problem were produced in March or earlier, and I also mentioned to him that some of you have had your motherboards replaced as well in an effort to solve the problem.) He said it is likely that I might get it back by Friday next week--for me, that's not really terribly helpful because I'll be out of the country by then, but hopefully it will arrive before my wife leaves on the 6th. If not...I'm pretty much hosed and stuck without a computer until someone can hand-carrry it into the country for me. :(  --But hopefully this will fix the problem!

I dont know what will be happened if they change all the things i have. I am so scare now but need to wait and will update to ur guys.

Look like there are lot of man who want to send x220 back to lenovo. I have no idea but hope that lenovo will verify all their model before launching and selling them for us. Two weeks are the long time for me to wait, i have a lot of work.

Apparently I have the hearing of a 50 year old, even though I'm just 20. Also, the fan never bothered me before, but today while updating the latest bios, it sounded just like a vacuum cleaner.

Is there anyone that found any improvements moving from BIOS 1.16 or 1.17 & Power Manager 3.59 to BIOS 1.19 and Power Manager 3.62?

DO NOT INSTALL BIOS 1.19!!!

DO NOT INSTALL BIOS 1.19!!!

I just installed it with PM 3.62 as recommended by JameZ and:

  1. Fan now spins at ~3000 RPM (with associated intrusive whine) even with just light browsing (before it was a ~2000 RPM)
  2. The 5 secs pulsing is still there

So much for an improvement!

Betreff: DO NOT INSTALL BIOS 1.19!!!

2011-07-24, 7:41 AM

I found the 1.16 BIOS had the best thermal settings.

For the rest: I think we have to live with it. Or do like I do: sell it and buy some machine which works like you can expect... I really regret  that I didn´t give it back straight away but waited for a solution by lenovo....
