X220 hibernates randomly, citing "critical battery"

2011-05-18, 23:01 PM

Hello,

I have now encountered the second major problem with my x220.  It chooses to randomly hibernate for no apparent reason, flagging critical battery status to the OS.  Upon resume, I receive the typical Windows-triggered warning about resuming with critical battery.  This happens independent of the Power Manager having been installed.

Upon searching, I discovered that another user seems had this problem with a different ThinkPad model.  Should I simply RMA the battery, or is the laptop to fault instead?

Please note that I have also had problems with a jumpy touchpad cursor when (and ONLY when) the 90w UltraSlim adapter is attached (and NOT with the 65w).  I posted another topic about this problem yesterday.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

This happened to me very occasionally early on with my T400 but seemed to disappear after a while.

Maybe try reinstalling the Power Management driver?

Hey Colonel,

That was actually my first solution for both of the problems I am having.  At this point, I am praying it may in fact be a battery issue causing both problems, but I am not confident that this is the case.

I will most likely be contacting Lenovo soon about this, but I would love if anyone here had solutions to provide.  Thank you!

Hey guys,

This just happened again, and this time in the field, which is not cool at all.

Any word on what might cause this and how I can have it fixed?

Have you ever conditioned the battery?  If you install Lenovo's power manager, under battery there's a battery maintenance tab. If you run the maintenance, what it does is discharge the battery totally and then recharges it totally.  Sometimes a new battery won't use its full potential until the maintenance is done.  It will discharge to like 40% and then act like it's dead. That's just an example.  Run the maintenance when you have some time, like overnight coz it takes awhile to run it.

Power manager will also tell you exactly what state the battery is in.  Like what the designed capacity is and what the actual capacity is.

Just as an fyi Lenovo will probably want you to install Power manager anyway in order to run a diagnostic on it.

Running maintenance on a crappy battery will sometimes give an old battery some extra life.

Dave

Forgive me if you already have Power manager installed. It's a little vague from your first post whether you actually have it in there or not.

All:

This has now happened to me a third time.  I am beginning to fear my business trip next week.

Hey topmahof,

I appreciate the suggestion.  I do, in fact, have Lenovo's Power Manager installed, and it is up to date.  I will attempt a battery conditioning procedure overnight soon I suppose, hoping that it may correct the problem.

For now, I have a trip coming up where the use of this laptop will be pivotal, so I may just set it to Sleep instead of Hibernate under critical battery and hope for the best.

Thanks for the suggestion. :-)

It's happened to me a few times (maybe 3 total) on my x120e. I've also had the screen brightness drop down to battery levels and the power manager randomly restart, but I'm not sure if it was caused by the AC adapter being pulled out slightly.
