X220 ips screen no backlight

2013-07-03, 15:15 PM

The ips screen on my x220 has no backlight. While the windows system can detect the IPS screen and the vga output is ok.  And I am pretty sure the screen and the cable is not damaged. It probably be something wrong with the motherboard. Does anyone knows which pin on the connector is for backlight? So that I can trace the wire and hopefully find out which components on the motherboard is damaged.Thanks.

How did you come to that conclusion? When there is no backlight, it is usually the the cable, inverter, or backlight itself that failed, not the motherboard.

This page has a diagram with the backlight cable: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-77193 (item # 4). You can test it and see where it connects to the motherboard.

There are 2 fuses on the motherboard that control the backlight and the LEDs on the control board. Contrary to the previous post, those fuses are the most common cause of no backlight on machines with LED backlights. The LED backlights are more dependable than CCFL backlights and there is no inverter to fail. The fuses on the newer machines, like X220, are smaller and burn VERY quickly

Resistance is zero ohms. I don't have one of those to look at, and many of the smaller fuses are not marked on the board, but have a code to represent the rating on the fuse. There is generally a .5 amp fuse (marked with an "F" on the fuse.). There is also a 2 amp ("N") or 3 amp ("P"). The designation are for Littelfuse brand, the most common, but I was told that some boards use a different manufacturer. The fuses are generally near the LCD connector, but they may be on the top or the bottom. (under the plastic sheets). To change the fuses, you need fairly good equipment. A quartz preheater and temperature-controlled rework station is the minimum

So what's to do with it now?

How do I find this fuse that I need to replace/bypass, and how do I make the whole thing working again?

I need my machine!

Is it easier to bypass the fuse, rather than replacing it?

Any photos, directions, and any other info on this will be appreciated.

Thanks!!

I have checked all the fuses on the motherboard, they're all good. Could it be some driving chip of the lcd is damaged?
