Should I test on, or off battery?

I experience it both on AC and battery, but I guess I have done most of my testing when on the battery, so that might be most helpful.

Thanks for checking this out, I appreciate it.

From 2 feet away, the sound is bearly audible and very directional.  So as long as I dont have the vga port side of the laptop pointed towards my ear, at two feet away, I can hardly hear the noise.

@atomicminded

The fact that you can just hear the noise from 2 feet away suggests that it is probably at around the same level as my machine. I don't find mine quite as directional though.

It is indeed pretty quiet, just a bit louder than the other machines I have tried.

Thank you very much for taking the time to help, you have set my mind at ease. I am fairly happy now that there is not a problem with my unit, and that this is just a normal amount of noise that I will get used to.

Hopefully, in the next few years as silent SSDs become the norm, manufacturers will take extra care to design the mainboard circuitry to reduce microphonic noise.

Have you tried to disable the power management of the CPU in BIOS? It should reduce the noise.

I did try disabling CPU power management in the BIOS, but it didn't have a noticeable effect.

It's actually quieter when the CPU is in a lower power mode - it is quieter when I manually set the cpu frequency to 800kHz, and louder if it stays at 2.7MHz. During normal "ondemand" frequency scaling, the changes in load cause the noise to vary a lot, which is more distracting than the actual volume itself.

But it is not a big deal, I plan to live with it and be happy with my machine :smileyhappy:

Electrical Noise from X220?

2011-07-26, 13:45 PM

Has anyone noticed a lot of 'electrical noise' coming from their X220(T)? I've noticed a static-y, high-frequency humming coming from the laptop. The noise occurs both when the laptop is plugged in or running off the battery. It doesn't seem power-profile related, since it happens when using either the "Power Source Optimized" and "Maximum Battery Performance" profile. It's there when the laptop sleeps, but disappears when the system goes into hibernation. I think it's strongest around the USB connectors and the dock port at the bottom, but I'm not absolutely sure.

That's from the CPU and/or its support circuits. It is there from X61, to my experience. You can disable SpeedStep and the sound is gone so maybe it is the sound of CPU adjusting its frequency.

@ColonelONeill: Yes, it's there when I mute the speakers

@ccl13: I'll try disabling SpeedStep. What's weird is that I have a Core i7 MBP (same chip as my X220T), and it's dead silent under the same conditions.
