X220 random shutdowns

2018-08-20, 0:41 AM

Hello,

intro:

I bought my X220 (i5 w/ IPS) around may/july 2011. Since, i have added ram (same module than original one), intel SSD in 2012, replaced the infamous oem whining fan in 2013 (from aliexpress). I love this computer.. The keyboard is too good to be true (for a laptop).. If only they used a 16:10 screen !

Cons though are horrid PWM refresh (i use IntelPWMControl to fix that), clumsy/useless touchpad and my screen is getting the "usual" white spots. Sound was terrible until i started using Dolby Home Theater drivers (night and day).

Anyway my main issue : I am experiencing random shutdown (computer stop responding and just shut down) for quite some time now. I don't use the computer everyday. But it happend once/twice a month average. (with AC plugged too).

I think the first time was 2014.. I never found the reason. It is not the ram, not my pwm stuff..). I found various topics and google results about x220 random shutdown. Seems it is likely a mainboard issue.

Does anyone have feedback about this (got his board fixed). Any idea how it would cost these day ? (if lenovo still fix 7 years old computer). I would love to fix this before buying a new battery.

Random shutdowns are often overheating.  Get a copy of tpfancontrol (freeware) and monitor temperaturs.

I will check if i can log temp with tpfancontrol but i am pretty sure this is not overheating. I happend randomly, often during idle (sitting on a table without use) / movie / web browsing, when the computer is cold.

But i have already encoded video for exemple (make it really hot), for hours without issues

Well, i might be late, but it was not heat problem ! 😋

I decided to order a new system board for my X220 4287-CTO (i5 2420). I should have done it long ago.

There is quite a bunch on ebay... I looked on lenovo site for some parts info. You have version with/without AMT, TPM, AES ... etc

FRUPlni5-2520MNVyAMTyTPMyAES - 04Y1822

Substitutes (3) : 04W0676, 04W2107, 04W3286

The 04W0676 is widely available new on ebay for 65€ shipped, so i will try these !

Strangely enough a sticker on my current motherboard indicate 04W3290, which is supposed to be a i5 2540 board 🤔

I doubt there is still a lot of x220 users, but i will let you know.
I use it occasionaly for business/travel and its perfectly fine. And the biggest reason i don't want to buy a new one is the terrible keyboard layout on the new ones.

I replaced the motherboard today. I have to fix the post Serial number / UID error by booting on the maintenance diskette.

The bad new is i got a "whining fan" again,  like when i got my X220 in 2011. I will have to put back the fan (a x230 model, "AVC" brand, that i bought later) from my old motherboard.

😭

EDIT : entering serial and generating uid worked with the maintenance diskette. Going to change the fan now.
