[X220] space bar key noise reduction

Since a while the space bar key is much noisier than other keys, especially if not pressed in the center.

Before to get a replacement keyboard I'dl like to clean and eventually put a little of oil on hinger under the key.

Can You tell me how can I remove the space bar key with no risk to break or wiken the key itself ?

Thanks, Stefano.

P.S.: I've already changed the keyboard some time ago. I'm using this one from about 5 months

Re: [X220] space bar key noise reduction

Hi TheLiar,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I regret to inform you that we cannot remove individual keys on the keyboard; the connecter is so delicate that it might break. Only think is that you have to check if there is any foreign particle stuck in between the keys, or you can check cleaning the keyboard with a vacuum cleaner.

If you find that issue still persists then you have to replace the complete keyboard unit.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Re: [X220] space bar key noise reduction

Of course you can remove individual keys carefully as you may break it. I guess the issue is missing silicone grease in the metal hinge mechanism. I had to fix brand new X220 keyboard because of the issue. Both Backspace and Enter keys made squeaky noises.

As for replacement keyboard, there are different FRUs so the new one might be worse than your current one.

Re: [X220] space bar key noise reduction

Hi Hemanth, sorry but I don't think so. In the past (with the prev keyboard) I've alread removed &replaces keys with no particular issues, simply following these instructions http://www.quikfixlaptopkeys.com/?p=14560

My concern in this case is about the "particularity" of the space bar.

Regards, Stefano.

Re: [X220] space bar key noise reduction

Hi TheLiar,

Lenovo (Hemanth) doesn't have any service procedure which involves replacing individual keys. They just replace the entire keyboard.

I'm not aware of anything special about removing the spacebar. Since you've removed other keys you know what to expect.

One suggestion is to remove the keyboard from the laptop first so you can look under the key and see exactly what you are doing.

As Puppy says, be careful, it's easy to break things.

I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

Re: [X220] space bar key noise reduction

Hi bananaman, as said the space bar key is far to be equal to other keys, so I don't know what to expect...

However it could be a good idea removing first the keyboard.

Thanks... crazy volunteer ! Smiley Happy

It isn't. Bigger keys like spacebar, Enter, Backspace or Shift have additional metal hinges mechanism inside. It is not easy to assembly it back, especially the Enter key.

So, do You think the risk in this case is more concrete than with other keys ?
