X220 uncontrollably switches to 50Hz refresh rate upon unplug from power source

2011-05-20, 12:52 PM

Hello,

I'd like to reiterate that I LOVE my x220 apart from the few issues I have with it.  Having said that, I am having the (seemingly) ubiquitous problem where the laptop constantly switches to 50Hz when unplugged from a power source.  I have tried reinstalling the Power Manager and Power Manager driver, and all of my system software is up to date.

Just to be certain, is everyone else experiencing this issue as well?  I know T420s owners recently reported it and it was subsequently forwarded to engineering.  As long as a fix is in the works I am happy. :-)

Nevermind -- Just solved the problem with the help of another post by JameZ on another Lenovo forum (regarding the same problem with another Lenovo laptop).  Here's the deal:

http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T420s-Screen-refresh-rate-drop-to-50Hz-when-on-Battery/ta-p/461845

Follow these instructions using the Intel driver of your choice, with one difference:

Search for 0xF800 instead and replace it with 0xF840.  There are two matches for this which require replacement in the driver inf file.

I used the newest Intel drivers instead of Lenovo's drivers from the support site, but you may use either.  If you choose to go the Intel driver route, you will need to force installation via Have Disk... from the Device Manager interface.

My problem is no solved, and I am much happier. Hope this helps someone else.  :-)

Moderator edit five weeks later: This is fixed by Lenovo and Intel in the latest graphics driver:

Maybe it's because of the Intel Graphics Driver. I used to have the same problem. Although in my power manager I set the screen refresh rate to be maintained at 60Hz, when I unplugged the source the screen turned back to be working at 50Hz. Then I opened my Intel Graphics Driver Properties, I found that the driver set the refresh rate to be 50Hz.

Maybe you can have a look at your driver setting, if it's 50Hz, you can manually set it to be 60Hz. Hope this can help.

You are not alone. I used to have the same problem with my x220 but after I made the change through Intel Graphic manager, the 60Hz setting sticked.

I have repeatedly switched it to 60Hz manually within the Intel Graphics Driver Settings dialogue, but the problem persists.  Each time I unplug, it switches back to 50Hz automatically and overrides my settings.

I am also confirming this behavior! I'm using the latest video driver (supplied by lenovo) and power manager.

Can engineering please be notified?!

as i pointed out in othersteve's thread on NBR (not realizing he had one here, too), the culprit is intel's own driver software.   specifically, it's controlled by the igfxpers.exe process.

see my post here for one possible solution: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/580903-working-manual-fix-50hz-unplug-issue.html#post7526070

Re: X220 uncontrollably switches to 50Hz refresh rate upon unplug from power source

Hey Erik,

Is it at all possible that some other software on the PC could be autoswitching the Intel graphics plan, thus forcing the Intel software to lower the refresh rate?  I ask for two particular reasons:

  1. This problem only appears to affects Lenovo notebooks if you do some Google searching, and
  2. The graphics plan changes within the Intel software from whatever it's set on to "Current Settings" every time the plug/unplug takes place.
I am actually not entirely convinced, thanks to the above two points, that this isn't somehow related to a setting within the Lenovo software someplace.  I know Lenovo engineering supposedly was looking at it on the T420s... hopefully that leads to a solution for us X220 owners now too.

steve - not that i'm personally aware.   you can test your hypothesis by performing a clean windows installation using no lenovo apps in the process.   then, install the intel display driver from intel's site rather than lenovo.   un-plug, re-plug, and see what happens.

Hey erik,

I really do appreciate your input.  That's a good idea, though honestly I don't know if I will bother with all of that now. :-)  Perhaps instead if I get a moment in the near future I may try wiping out all Intel graphics drivers entirely from the system manually and then reinstalling.

Having said all of that, on a somewhat unrelated note, I'm getting 4,900+ in 3DMark06, which is shocking!  After experiencing the trouble with the unplug/replug refresh rate switch, I tried a wide variety of solutions including using the 2361 graphics drivers from Intel's site.  This plus my high-speed fan settings at anything over 60C probably helped contribute to the score I guess.

But back to the topic... is anyone else experiencing these same refresh rate switching issues?

Othersteve, I noticed it when I did the first installation, but I don't seem to have it now - can you please remind me how you can reliably replicate the 50hz switching?

Thanks,
Petrov.
