X220 wireless internet connection not functioning

2012-09-22, 23:04 PM

I have an X220 (4287XF5) that runs well and it's a joy to use, except for why I'm posting.  The machine is new since June 2012.  I have solid Ethernet Internet connection and that is how I connect to the Internet now.  Wireless is Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 and its driver is 14.2.0.10.  Wireless worked for a time, though flaky, for several weeks.  It would drop and then I would have to reconnect.  Now I can't even do that.  When I try to connect wireless at at home (cable and Cicso Linksys wireless) or at my office (DSL and Netgear wireless), I get the following message:

"Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS) server is not responding."

I have used the Lenovo software to keep drivers up to date.

So, how can I resolve this?

Doug

To further clarify:

Three other laptops at home have no trouble connecting wirelessly to the router.  One of those is my trusty four-year old T61 (a T9300, 7658CTO).  The only problem is with my X220.  That suggests that the problem is not with router settings but with something in the X220 itself.

Thanks for weighing in.

Have you tried connecting to an open network - like at McDonald's? Perhaps you have a defective card.

Have you tried to remove and reinstall the wifi drivers? Do you configure your wifi with the lenovo software or with the windows configuration?

If you want to eliminate a defect wifi the quick way download yourself a live linux (e.g. Ubuntu, Fedora), move it to a stick (there are tools for that e.g.: http://www.linuxliveusb.com/ ) and plug into your x220 and choose it as the first boot device in bios (or in the boot device menu in interrupted startup). If your wifi card is fine you should be able to connect to your router with the linux system.

Re: X220 wireless internet connection not functioning

2012-09-25, 19:17 PM

At work (where I am now, 3pm) I had two problems.  First, I upgraded the firmware of my old Netgear DG834G v4 DSL wireless modem.  That seemed to clarify some wireless problems I've had for some time now, but time will tell.

Second, I uninstalled the Intel Centrino 6205 driver.  I then rebooted with an Ethernet cable attached.  As the desktop settled in, Win7 automatically downloaded the appropriate Intel 6205 driver.  I then rebooted again (removing the Ethernet cable), waited for the desktop to settle in, and clicked on an icon in the lower right to find wireless connections.  I clicked on the name of the wireless modem, typed in the right password, and lo everything now works.

I didn't use the Lenovo software to install its version of the 6205 driver. I am now using the one automatically installed through Win7.  I'd appreciate comments on the value of one over the other.  Is it time to leave well enough alone, or is there something useful in the Lenovo driver that might not be native to Intel's offering?

I still have to try everything out when I get home and try to connect to the Linksys Cisco wireless modem there.  But I'm really pleased that everything is working in my office.

BTW, I really like this X220.  Finding an mSATA SSD at a decent price is next.

Thanks to those who weighed in.  I never did get to a local hot spot to test things out, but the next time I'm at Panera Bread, I'll do that.  So, again, what might the difference be between the Lenovo driver and the Intel driver?

'afternoon.

the difference between the drivers is that Lenovo tests and qualifies the drivers available through Lenovo channels.

if you look at the 6205 in Device Manager, what driver version do you see reported?

the latest available from the X220 driver matrix here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-77280

is v14.03.000 at this link:

regards.

Re: X220 wireless internet connection not functioning

I tried to post last evening from home.  Wireless connection dropped three times, the last one just before I intended to hit "Post."

Home internet wireless connection is through a Linksys WRT160N v3 wireless device connected to a Motorola cable modem.  Wireless connection was unusually slow last evening on my X220, though not on my wife's Dell Inspiron laptop.  The currently installed Centrino 6205 driver is Intel 15.1.0.18, dated 20 February 2012.

Lenovo's device driver is version 14.03, obviously a release prior to that which Win7 installed automatically.  I would like to understand the strengths (or not) of staying with drivers modified (I presume) by Lenovo.  I've worked with computers for twenty-five years, starting with MS-DOS 2.11 on 8088s back in the day, but I'm not by any means an expert on this subject of how to determine the best driver for a particular piece of hardware.

And, to confuse matters further, I've found other Intel drivers out there: 15.1.1 and 15.2.0.  Is this whole thing really about trying things until something works good enough?  I sincerely invite further comments.
