Re: X220 with USB3.0, no mSata SSD possible ?

2011-06-20, 16:34 PM

Now that's just great, the MSATA port not working is a 3rd party problem?  How is it if you use a third party headset and you get no sound, would that also be a third party problem?  Or if you use a 3rd party ethernet cable and networking doesn't work?  In particular taking into consideration that Lenovo would not offer you headsets or ethernet cables with your Laptop, so that you have little possibilities but to buy somwhere else...

I made exactly the same point on the phone, and specifically requested that they send someone over to swap out my system board, but they declined in favor of a depot repair.  I think the depot is a terrible option:

-my 21 day window would probably expire while the laptop is in depot service
-I thought they recommend that you remove all 3rd party equipment before sending it to the depot, so if I sent my mSATA drive too, I might not get it back!
-it isn't really fair to have me wait for the laptop, when I've paid for onsite repair, while they troubleshoot the hardware that should have been working in the first place.

1st post :)

same problem here with X220 and Intel 80GB mSATA not showing up (in BIOS or anywhere)

4286CTO - built 10 JUN 11

i7-2720 8GB of Lenovo RAM

BIOS 1.17 (machine came with 1.16 which also did not 'see' the mSATA) -- Embedded controller v. 1.08

ran all the troubleshooting steps others described (including reseating mSATA card)

SSDMAEMC080G2C1 bought from retailer (not available from Lenovo when I ordered my X220) version G11968-503 (pack date 10 APR 11)

other than this issue, it's a neat little machine :)

cheers

JameZ: I would really like to have an update today.  As I said, this problem keeps me from using the laptop the way I want it.  Please make this experience less unpleasant by providing more information about the problem.

Agreed.  The pace at which Lenovo works seems way too slow (also see i7 throttle issue thread).

Re: X220 with USB3.0, no mSata SSD possible ?

My X220 has just arrived and mSATA is coming later this week.  I really hope mSATA works with X220 as advertised.

But my hunch is telling me otherwise.  I have a feeling that there are some fundamental issues unresolved with X220 in general.

I hope I'm wrong!

So really no statement today from Lenovo, the last was on the 16th.  I cannot say I'm very happy about how this is being handled.

My X220 also fails to recognize the mSata drive.  (Does not show in bios.)

Type 4286-CTO

Bios: 1.17

Drive:  KingSpec ksd-smp.1-064MJ 64gb MSATA SSD MLC.

JM601-mSATA-v0.1

Re: X220 with USB3.0, no mSata SSD possible ?

This will be fixed with a BIOS update in July.

Every X220 is categorized either as "WWAN model" or "non-WWAN model".

"WWAN model" may have WWAN card pre-installed from Lenovo factory, or only antenna and wiring pre-installed and customer can add the WWAN card later (either way it is considered "WWAN model").  "non-WWAN model" does not have WWAN card or antenna/wiring.

For some reason, X220 BIOS is disabling the mSATA device on certain WWAN models.  The mSATA device works on certain other WWAN models, and on all non-WWAN models.  The BIOS update in July will enable the mSATA device on all models, even where it doesn't work today.  Apologies for everyone's inconvenience caused by this issue.

I just wanted to voice my concern as well - I recently ordered an i5 system, with the expectation that the mSATA slot will work (I ordered a mSATA as well). Even though reports of i5 issues are few, I would like an official response from Lenovo.

edit: beaten to the punch, thanks for the official response. Much appreciated!
