X230 Bright spot repair

2014-01-09, 1:21 AM

Hello, my brand new laptop recently developed 9 bright spots after only 3 months of owning it. After researching this matter it seems to be a common occurrence to X230 ,and X220 Laptops(From the many form post regarding these laptops). After sending my laptop to get repaired I find out that it will cost me $ 950 for the repair just for the LCD??? The Price I paid for the laptop from lenovo cost less than that. How is that even humanly possible for a problem that seems to only happen with the X230 ,and X220 Laptops.

Right now, I am currently waiting to talk to the supervisor of the lady who I spoke to which will take 2 days. Furthermore, The lady I spoke to today said It will most likely not change anything. My question is why am  I being charged for something under warranty for a price more than the laptop, and  for a issue that seems to be a building defect with the lenova laptop?

This is my first Lenova computer ,and I can Honestly Say I don't appreciate the way they are charging me for issues on their end.

I have not seen your machine and it is difficult to diagnose from 2200 miles away, but most, but not all, bright spots are caused by pressure, usually from a thumb or a finger pressing on the screen when it is opened or closed. If that is the cause, it would not be covered. Again, I have not seen your machine.

I would be more inclined to accept that if it was not for the many threads detailing this issue like this one  which show that http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-IPS-display-problem-weird-bright-spot-on-the-screen/td-p/546641 this issue is a common occurrence thanks to building design of the laptop.

Now disregarding the issue behind the problem why is the price 950! My laptop costed $ 874.65.For what there asking its not even worth it. I should just save my money for another laptop. In addition, If I am not mistake the replacement part would cost something Like this http://www.amazon.com/LG-LP125WH2-SL-B3-REPLACEMENT/dp/B009XS0VHC .

Let's make a couple of things clear...

a) If Lenovo denies to cover the LCD replacement under warranty, you can tell them to send the laptop back unrepaired and they MUST do that. They can't charge you $950 or even $0.95 for a repair that you haven't authorized.

b) You can do your own research and replace the screen by yourself. It's not that difficult.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

Hello Guru, I understand that I am not being forced to pay the 950(I am sorry If it seemed that way) , and I understand they have to send my laptop back to me if I request. I was just baffled  that a warranty guarantee(even if they blame the damage on me) by lenovo would cost more to repair my computer(only the LCD) than my actual computer costed when I bought it.

Thank you for the advice though, It looks like I might have to research this and repair my laptop my self. I am  college student so I do not have the luxury of being able to afford repair bills like this.

You should point out to the person that you're dealing with in the escalations department that this is a known issue and direct them to the thread(s) dealing with it. Whether that's going to get you anywhere is a whole another matter.

Worst case scenario, you'll learn how to swap a LCD on a ThinkPad...

My understanding is that there are a couple of different revisions of the IPS screen used in X220/230 and that not all of them develop the spots with equal ease. You may want to do some research on that aspect of the problem if you end up being forced to swap the panel yourself...

Very best of luck to you.

Cheers,

George

I think if your case gets escalated to the customer care people, i.e. Lenovo in North Carolina and not the contracted repair depot, that you will be talking to the right people. They should have authority to approve the repair under warranty...they may or may not do so, of course, but I'd guess you might have better luck with them.
