X230 Ericsson mobile broadband not working with 3 SIM card

2012-08-23, 16:18 PM

I've just received my ThinkPad X230 (which is lovely!) and bought a SIM card from 3 to use with the Ericsson mobile broadband I specified with it. Lenovo Access Connections displays the 3 transmitter and tries to connect, but I haven't been able to get it to work at all. Any ideas? It starts by not being able to find the provider, but changing from 3 3G to 3 GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA/3G just results in a failed connection and the error log below. Any ideas? I don't know whether this is a problem with the hardware, SIM card or something else:

onnection status: Not connected
Cause: DHCP server not responding.
Error code: 031
Recommended action:
The DHCP server on this network failed to respond to the request your system made for automatic IP address configuration. To force another request, click Repair. If the problem persists, contact your network administrator.

If the problem persists, contact your network administrator and provide the troubleshooting information below.

Hi dtowsey,

First things first, have you updated your systems drivers and BIOS? I see there is a newer version of BIOS which can be downloaded independently here:  BIOS Update Utility for Windows 7 but if you haven't already, run TVT System Update to ensure all drivers are up to date. Once we are certain the ThinkPad has all the latest updates we can cross that off the list of potential reasons for your inability to connect to the network.

I hope this at least starts you off on the right track! :D

Ed

Thank you for helping! I hadn't come across the TVT System Update program yet and it did have some updated wireless drivers (so this was helpful), but neither that nor the BIOS update has solved the problem. The 'transmitter icon' in TVT Access Connections on the system tray comes on briefly 2-3 times, then goes to the red cross, then it goes through the errors described. The location profile is Mobile Broadband -- I'm assuming Lenovo Mobile Access is for the Lenovo SIM card.

Okay great!

You should have System Update on your ThinkPad already. If for some reason you don't, you can download it on the support site here: ThinkVantage System Update 4.03

Once everything is up-to-date, restart your system and see how it goes!

Hi dtowsey,

We're assuming that you ran Lenovo Mobile Broadband Activation. What did it say? If you don't find it, download it from here and run it

Readme: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/g1wac3ww.txt

Installer: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/g1wac3ww.exe

Tell us what you found!

I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

I think you may have just solved it for me! I had run the Mobile Broadband Activation program, but when it told me that 'other' network providers weren't supported (i.e. not Lenovo Mobile Access) I assumed it wasn't useful. Now I realise I should have clicked on 'next' anyway! Apparently I have to wait 24-48 hours now for Three to confirm my activation... Will post again to let you know whether I've got on.

Still no joy I'm afraid! I'm still getting 043, service provider not available, even though the 3 transmitter is displayed on access connections. The connection indicator flashes a bit then fails. Strangely, two SMS messages from 3 were in my inbox, although sending an SMS fails. Everything is updated and WiFi works fine. What else should I check?

PS -- SMS are actually being sent and received, despite the error message.

Have now solved it myself:

1) Create system restore point
2) Uninstall mobile broadband driver and centrino ultimate-N in device manager, but keep files
3) Reboot
4) Lenovo access connections automatically connects to mobile broadband. It's then just a matter of going in there and connecting to wifi also.

Everything is working beautifully now, and switching between wifi and mobile automatically. I think it was just corrupted TCP/IP settings in one or both adaptors.
