X230 Support of Windows 10 1709?

2018-04-07, 20:29 PM

Is anyone with ThinkPad X230 running Windows 10 1709 successfully? Lenovo site does not list X230 as tested with Windows 10 1709. Trying to install 1709 from 1607 fails. Microsoft Support directed me to Lenovo Support. Thanks for sharing with me your insights on this topic.

Re: X230 Support of Windows 10 1709?

I have an X201 and an X230

The X201 updated from 1703 to 1709 without blinking.

But the X230 has been a nightmare.

Going on for over 2 months now. About 25 attempts via Windows Update and via downloaded 1709 ISO.

No way is this thing going to upgrade.

Have spent about 30 hours trying every suggestion on the net.

The key seems to be the error code.

0xC1900101 - 0x30017
The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operation.

Microsoft says:-
An error that begins with 0xC1900101 is usually a driver error. If you see any of these error codes, try the following steps first to fix the problem. If these steps don’t work, see Resolve Windows 10 upgrade errors for more detailed technical info.

I have tried uninstalling every unnecessary device under device manager but even running bare bones no way will it get past this driver error.

Does anybody have either 1709 or 1803 successfully running on an X230?

Or does anybody know for a fact that it is not possible?

It would be useful to know before investing more time on this.

Anybody from Lenovo team want to chime in?

Hi,

Any of the attempts a clean install, or have all been upgrade/update tries?

They were all updates to 1703. No clean installs.

Every attempt failed and rolled back.

I have tried a 1001 suggestions from the internet so at this stage I am just trying to veriify whether or not I am on a wild goose chase and should just give up.

The get-WindowsUpdateLog from Windows Powershell is useless and does not say why the update failed.

I am not going to try anything else until someone can confirm that they have 1709 or 1803 running on an X230

I can confirm that my x230 I5, X230 I7, and X230T I7 are all updated to 1803. All were updated from earlier versions by windows update with no errors.

Thanks Ohio.

That is very useful information.

I will have a go at getting straight to 1803 and bypassing 1709 using the ISO I downloaded.

If anybody knows any reason why I should not try to go straight from 1703 to 1803 (missing out 1709) please let me know.

^I did not succeed with 1803.

I got the same problem as with upgrading to 1709

I am still stuck on 1703.

Not sure what to do with this as I want to stay with the X230 as it is the only compact laptop that holds 16Gb ram.

The newer compact X series all have smaller 8Gb ram limits.

The X280 can be configured with 16GB of RAM.  Poking around sales sites it looks like they're available through retailers, but not direct from Lenovo just now.

FWIW,
