Re: X230/Windows 7 crashes when entering sleep/hibernate (except when user logged out)

Here is the system information line of the BIOS in my X220:

BIOS Version/Date????? LENOVO 8DET69WW (1.39 ), 18/07/2013

I?m not aware of any newer version for the X220.

Hi Mpty,

Can you provide us the “Dump File” so that it will be easy for us to verify the exact issue? You can use any 3rd party cloud link to share the file e.g. drop-box.

gcast

Please send me the dump files, if your are also facing BSOD issue.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Re: X230/Windows 7 crashes when entering sleep/hibernate (except when user logged out)

Dear TimothyHamer

Thanks for your suggestion! ? Tried it out but it doesn?t work for me: my X220 (w/Windows 7 Pro) behaves unchanged: i.e.: Suspend to sleep works before logging on and within the first minute or so after logging on. Trying Suspend later darkens the screen immediately and produces a BSOD after about 10 minutes.

To make sure, we?re talking about the same thing, I did the following:

I.e., DESELECTED ?Allow the computer to turn off? this device to save power? for all USB Device Controllers that have a ?Power Management? tab in their Device Manager Properties window.

In my case, the Device Manager Node ?Universal Serial Bus controllers? has 9 entries of which only the two first entries, both ?Generic USB Hub?, and the two last entries, both ?USB Root Hub? have a ?Power Management? tab in their Properties window.

I also verified that the drivers of all four of these controllers are up-to-date.

Regards,
gcast

Re: X230/Windows 7 crashes when entering sleep/hibernate (except when user logged out)

That's disappointing to hear.

We are talking about the same thing: on my X1 Carbon I have 7 entries of which three have a power management tab, otherwise it is exactly as you describe.

In total I have had only one BSOD (subsequent to my post) since making this change, whereas before it would fail to enter sleep successfully about 50% of the time. However, the symptoms are slightly different on X1 Carbon - before I was rarely getting a BSOD but more commonly on entering sleep the dynamic function strip (on X1) stayed on, the power light stayed on but the PC was unresponsive to anything other than holding the power button down for 10s.

I do still think this must be related to USB power management as it has provoked a significant change in behaviour on my machine.

You might want to try creating an energy use report to check for USB errors. Instructions for this are here:

Re: X230/Windows 7 crashes when entering sleep/hibernate (except when user logged out)

Thanks, timothyhamer,

When I write, I get BSODs, I really mean that the system hangs for a prolonged period of time. Usually, once it is clear that suspend isn?t working, say after 30 seconds or 1 minute, I press the power button for 4 seconds to shorten the waiting. But when I leave the system to itself, the BSOD appears after 10 minutes for 2 or 3 seconds. Out of maybe 20 such cases that I let the system to itself, i.e., waiting for 10 minutes, the system twice DID suspend successfully, and once the BSOD remained for a long period of time, so long that again I decided to end it by pressing the power button for 4 seconds. In other words, there is some stochastics involved in my system (an X220) as well.

The energy use report produced several interesting lines (see below).

Re: X230/Windows 7 crashes when entering sleep/hibernate (except when user logged out)

Afraid I am out of ideas. The USB fix appears to have made a significant improvement to my machine, yours appears different. Before when mine attempted to enter sleep it would never recover, no matter how long I left it.

I checked my energy report. There is no reference to cryptsvc - maybe that is causing your issue. My sleep state settings appear the same (S1 + S2 = False, S3 + S4 = True).

Re: X230/Windows 7 crashes when entering sleep/hibernate (except when user logged out)

Indeed, the dynamics and statistics appear to differ somewhat between your X1 and my X220 ? yet, as deselecting the ?allow the computer to turn off this device? switches for the USB controllers only affects the statistics in a (sometimes) favorable way, and at all, that such a switch should have to be set to obtain standard operation ? i.e., the ability to suspend to sleep ? is an indication of the underlying cause but not a remedy.

Re: X230/Windows 7 crashes when entering sleep/hibernate (except when user logged out)

In the meantime, I incidentlly noticed, that my X220 does NOT crash when entering sleep, provided that at boot time (and after!) the WLAN switch is turned off AND also, the ethernet cable is not plugged in.

In that case, my X220 suspends and resumes flawlessly. However, as soon as the WLAN is activated again or the Ethernet is plugged in again, during this kind of testing, the problem of crashing on suspend returns.

Re: X230/Windows 7 crashes when entering sleep/hibernate (except when user logged out)

Further progress in understandin the cause of crashing on suspending to sleep: if Dropbox (3.4.3) is uninstalled, problem ceases. On re-installation it re-appears
