X240 M.2 SSD

2014-06-16, 18:15 PM

My brother got a X240 with a regular 1TB HDD, and I'm looking to help him with upgrading to an internal SSD for the OS/Apps. I first thought it just used a regular mSATA, but it apparently uses a new style called M.2.

Unfortunately I can't seem to find any info on what's supported, how large can they be, etc...

My local computer store has this for M.2 in 512gb size, would this fit in the X240?

Howdy HiVolt,

I don't think that one will fit.  There are several different lengths of m.2 SSDs and the one in the X240 is 42mm.  The one you linked is longer than that.

Up until recently the highest capacity 42mm part was 128GB IIRC, but I think someone has come out with a 256GB 42mm unit.  [edit] I'm not able to verify that just now.  [more edit] Yes I am.  See post below.

Here's their compatibility list.  Please note I have no personal experience with this company.

Betreff: X240 M.2 SSD

2014-06-16, 18:26 PM

No, this SSD won´t fit. The 2280 formfactor can´tbe used, you need smaller 2242 M.2 SSDs.

Currently, the largest available capacity in the 2242 formfactor is 128 GB. 256 GB SSD will be available soon: http://www.thessdreview.com/daily-news/latest-buzz/mydigitalssd-announces-worlds-first-256gb-sata-m-2-2242-ssd-computex-2014-update/

I see, thanks a lot. Well he'll be disappointed, but 256gb might still do the trick.

I've edited my post.  I thought I'd seen a 256GB 42mm part somewhere, but I can't find it now :(

I may simply have that wrong, or it may have been announced but isn't available yet.

Apologies,

Z.

No

The length is too big, 80 mm, in order to fit it. Look at the single sided, 22x42 mm drives.
MyDigitalSSD MDM242, Plextor (LITEON IT N3-L2128-01) are compatible drives.

I have a x-240 and put a 7mm samsung 1 tb SSD in it.  It works great and is super fast.  It was easy to put in.

FWIW, I found that 256GB 42mm reference:

http://mydigitalssd.com/news.php

New Product: 256GB MyDigitalSSD Super Boot Drive SATA 2242 M.2 NGFF

"256GB MyDigitalSSD Super Boot Drive SATA 2242 M.2 NGFF to ship as early as July/August ...This small form factor solid state drive, measuring only 22mm x 42mm, packs a punch with read speeds up to 540MB/sec and write speeds up to 400MB/sec (ATTO)."

I'm not endorsing the company or product.  I have no personal experience with either.

The m.2 drives do not fit.  You need a 7 mm old fashioned shaped SSD.  I put a 1 TB Samsung 840 in my machine and it works GREAT.

42mm M.2 SSDs do fit. Also, you don't need a 7mm drive, 9.5mm drives fit as well.
