X240 WWAN stuck on Edge

2015-05-13, 8:23 AM

In company where I work we have about 20 X240 Thinkpads for about a year. Recently we encountered problems that WWAN is stuck on Edge and does not switch to UMTS or HSPA anymore. Currently there are 2 such laptops. Reinstallation of drivers and even Windows does not help. Even if I boot with Linux, Ericsson N5321GW stays on Edge network which is totaly unusable. I think it's very bad since Windows 8 there is no WWAN manager of any kind available but the one which comes with Windows and is frankly total mess up. Is there a way to make WWAN work normal again?

Are you sure there is currently 3G signal at your location ?

Of course I'm sure. I have 2 of them on desk and one performs normally other don't. We have 20 such laptops and 2 of them won't switch above edge anymore.

Open Command Prompt and type: netsh mbn show visibleproviders i=*

That displays list of providers and supported data classes.

I'd advice to check out wwan card radio current state and available options using AT command. Of course, if diagnostic or modem port is available (I can't specify clearly what port type of N5321GW accepts AT commands).
AT+CFUN=?
AT+CFUN?

I have no idea how to do that in Windows, since there is no visible COM port, but I managed to get it in Linux:

socat - /dev/ttyACM1,crnl

AT+CFUN=?
AT+CFUN=?
+CFUN: (0,1,4-6),(0,1)

AT+CFUN?
AT+CFUN?
+CFUN: 4

Is modem port absent too?

"+CFUN: 4" means presently modem transmit and receive RF circuits are turned off, it's the same as "flight mode".

AT+CFUN=6 - turns radio on (UMTS circuit only, not GSM/GPRS one).
AT+CFUN=1 - turns modem to the full functional mode.

So, in the Linux the test above isn't demonstrative, both OSs are able to turn modem radio on. What's the output of +CFUN? on the laptop with "good" modem?

I can't believe in the Windows modem is in the restricted functional mode by default, output of +CFUN is "5" (GSM/GPRS radio is turned on only).

There might be a reason of such behaviour. As the Windows itself selects network type for wwan connection in the "auto" mode (the more the signal power is the more chance certain network technology will be selected to establish connection), there is a chance two modems (or modems and laptops antennas, together) have a low sensitivity. Because of the broken modems, broken antennas or antenna wires, mixed up antennas (main, aux connectors), insecure antennas connection to the modem etc. So, check out modems and antennas installtion. Or even exchange "good" and "bad" modems and repeat the tests.
