If you are getting to the starting windows screen, try going into the BIOS and resetting it to the defaults.

Re: X240 cannot boot windows 7 64-bit after upgrade bios 2.36

@JDGillis, Thanks for reply. I tried resetting to default but no luck.

I found that I am not alone here... same problem happens on X250 new BIOS.

It can be fixed by the same method which is diabling "Execution Prevention".  Note that 'restore to default setting' will enable this lovely 'Execution Prevention' option and then make the boot failure.  It definitely a bug in the new BIOS.

Thanks all in this post:

Re: X240 cannot boot windows 7 64-bit after upgrade bios 2.36

I notified Think Engineering that X240 is being impacted with frozen boot up cycles in addition to X250, T450, and T450s systems receiving August BIOS releases that are running Windows 7.

I will post again when I receive an update on the fix.

Thank you,

Re: X240 cannot boot windows 7 64-bit after upgrade bios 2.36

I found another issue if diabling "Execution Prevention"...

All Windows 2012 VM in VirtualBox and VMware Workstation will fail to boot.  They work perfectly before upgrading the BIOS...  it kills me.

Updated: Windows 10 VM also fail to boot

Re: X240 cannot boot windows 7 64-bit after upgrade bios 2.36

In response to customer reports of ThinkPad notebook systems freezing after upgrading to a BIOS published in August 2016, Lenovo has investigated and found root cause.

More information can be found in this KB article: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/ThinkPad-Notebooks-Freezing-At-Boot-Up-A...

A customer-reported workaround for restoring normal boot up behavior can be found here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T450-Windows-splash-freezes-after-BIOS-u...

I will post again when the BIOS update containing this fix is released for this model.

Re: X240 cannot boot windows 7 64-bit after upgrade bios 2.36

In response to customer reports that after a BIOS update to some ThinkPads, the system may fail to boot, hanging on the Windows splash screen, Lenovo has provided a Service TIP detailing a workaround. A permanent solution will be provided via future BIOS update.

The Service TIP can be found here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/sf16-t0079

Thank you,

Re: X240 cannot boot windows 7 64-bit after upgrade bios 2.36

Hi Amy Tupper,

Unfortunately the TIP cannot solve the problem after I follow all the steps.  I still need to disable 'Execution Prevention' to make my Windows 7 boot.  Please help.

Cheers,
