X260 keyboard backlight Fn + spacebar not working

2020-06-18, 15:23 PM

Hi all,

I did post this by error on the X tablet forum instead of the X laptop section. Sorry for the double posting.

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Tablet-and-Helix-Laptops/Keyboard-backlight-not-working-for-fn-spacebar/m-p/5022211

I do have an X260 on which i did a fresh windows 10 install. Most everything works well, however, a minor annoyance is, that the keyboard back-light doesnt turn on with the Fn + Spacebar combination as it should.

The keyboard is back-light enabled, and it can be turned on and off using the Lenovo Vantage software. In that sense, is more of a minor annoyance than a critical issue. All other fn combinations work, even showing the on-screen OSD: volume, mute, wifi, they all work as they should. It is only the back-light failing.

I do see the keyboard in the device manager, and it does show as a "standard keyboard". There is no special driver, or tab to adjust it. I have tried reinstalling the hotkey driver several times, rolling back and forward, etc, to no avail. The hotkey version I have is 9.1.0.3, oct 2019, which is the latest available in the lenovo site. The computer is up to date both with Lenovo updates and Windows updates.

Is there a solution? I can guess i dont have the right driver, because the complains dont seem pervasive, and they are only similar issues going back to 2013-2016.

Or is this something that just happens when using Windows 10?

Thanks,

sancat

Hi sancat,

Keyboard backlight is a BIOS function for standard keyboards. So you can update to latest BIOS to check the behavior. Hope that will help you.

Hi,

Thanks for following up.

I just booted the computer and went into BIOS to check:

I'm running UEFI BIOS R02ET73W / 1.46

This is the latest release from the Lenovo site.

The embedded controller is version R02HT33W / 1.15

This is also the latest version available.

The ME Firmware is version 11.8.77.3664

Lenovo auto update does not report the machine is missing any update. The machine has been up to date since the last 3 weeks.

The machine type is PC0EF4HZ

All "Fn" functions work fine: volume, mute, brightness, etc etc.

The only "Fn" function not working is the back-light.

And also the back-light exists and works, but can only be turned on or off, via the Lenovo Vantage software, not with the Fn + Spacebar, as in all my other Lenovo computers.

Best,

sancat

Thank you.

Do let me know if you need any information about the machine, or to run any type of diagnostic.

I'm handy with computers.

Re:X260 keyboard backlight Fn + spacebar not working

Hi,

The plot thickens.

This morning I tried to login, and the keyboard was kinda not responsive. I couldnt type my password. I did launch the on-screen keyboard, to enter the password, and that did work fine.

So, not all keys "not work".

Pressing escape toggles the Fn Lock.

with the Fn Lock in place, all F keys work fine.

But I cant type letters or numbers at all.

Some letters trigger actions. For example pressing an "S" opens a window to search on dropbox.

It seems like either Alt or Ctrl or Fn is stuck.

On the upside, now the Fn Spacebar combination turns on the keyboard backlight.

Either there is something truly wrong with this computer (I bought it used), or the keyboard driver is flaky.

The keyboard driver shows up as "standard PS/2" keyboard.

Also, an external keyboard works just fine. It seems the key that is stuck is the Fn key.

I did check on BIOS/UEFI and the option to have Fn always on is not enabled. I did change to try if it helped getting Fn unstuck, to no avail.

Also while changing the BIOS/UEFI, the keys still dont work. I had to use an external keyboard to do it.
