X270 BiOS update (1.24) fan fix for Linux not working?

2017-11-07, 17:36 PM

According to 1.24s changelog it fixes a linux fan issue. I am aware of an issue where the fan keeps going at full speed after resume from suspend. This problem still occurs after the 1.24 update on my machine though (Ubuntu 17.04, kernel 4.10.0-38).

Also if this is not the place to report such a thing I wouldn't mind being directed to the right one.

Hello carestad,

I am presuming you installed the BIOS after downloading it from the web, possibly the ISO version?  After installing it did you select Setup Defaults and then reinstate any changes you may have made previously?

Could you also post the following information from you BIOS Main menu.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. I did not reset BiOS settings to default when updating it. I don't really remember if that was even a choice? However, I did a reset (load defaults?) today.

My BiOS version info is as follows:

UEFI BIOS Version: R0IET46W (1.24)

UEFI BIOS Date (Year-Month-Date): 2017-10-23

Embedded Controller Version: R0IHT33W (1.15)

ME Firmware Version: 11.6.10.1196

Machine Type Model: 20HN0013MX

Hi again,

After resetting BiOS and everything this morning at work, the fans ran at full speed again after resuming from suspend when I got back from work. This only happens after the first suspend after being in a docking station. Suspending the laptop undocked and resuming it will fix the fan running at full speed.

@Andy_Lenovo

I just experienced the fan issue again and to my surprise a reboot did not actually fix it. Only re-suspending it and resuming will sort the fan blowing at full speed.

hi carestad,

could you share if alone system can duplicate the issue ? or only found issue with some docking connected ?

if can duplicate the issue by alone system, could you try Ubuntu 16.04 ? newer system may not stable.

Hi

I have only been able to reproduce (don't really need to reproduce, it happens pretty much every time I resume my laptop when getting home from work) this issue when resuming from suspend after it being connected to a docking station. If I run the system on battery only and no docking, this does not happen. I also tried Ubuntu 17.10 and the same problem ocurred there. Have not tried 16.04 but could probably test this in January if needed.

Hi carestad,

thank you for your update. seems there is communication trouble between your dock and system.

could you share more detail about your dock such as a picture from the dock label ? and any device connected to the docking ? I will follow your scenario and try to duplicate the issue.

Best regards
Jan

 Hi

As I am out of office for Christmas still I don't have the exact P/N and S/N for the dock I use, but it is the Ultra Dock 170W model I use. Currently only RJ45, HDMI, DisplayPort, USB (keyboard + mouse) and power being connected when resuming/suspending. Can update when I get back to the office with a picture of the label underneath it.
