X270 i5-7200 CPU throttles to 0.38GHz when using the 6 cell battery, any ideas on how to solve this?

2019-09-12, 11:17 AM

I have an issue with CPU throttling on a new X270 with an i5-7200 processor that I picked up a few days ago.

The machine works as expected when plugged in or when running off the non-removable battery. However, there is an issue when running it from its ThinkPad Battery 68+ (6 cell) part number 0C52862. As soon as the machine starts running from the 6-cell battery, the CPU gets throttled to 0.38GHz and everything becomes super slow and barely usable. Even keystrokes take a second to register.

It's very strange because when first powering on the machine, it runs unthrottled for 10-15 seconds before the throttling kick in.

As soon as the battery is disconnected, the throttling stops and performance returns to normal.

This is exactly the same issue as these people have been having, with the same CPU on the T470 - even the throttling frequency is the same:

I have updated to the latest BIOS available and reset the BIOS settings to default however the problem remains. Lenovo Vantage is installed as well as all the latest updates/drivers.

I sent in a support ticket several days ago but have still not heard back. Any ideas on how to solve this?

I have this issue too. Although I have i7-7600

What I have noticed is:
- the problem is appearing after the PC was in SLEEP mode, no problem after HIBERNATE
- the problem is appearing after RESTART, no problem after SHUTDOWN.

So, I ended up not using SLEEP and not making a RESTART, but a full SHUTDOWN.

It is definitely BIOS and should be addressed by Lenovo with BIOS update. Yes, I do have the latest BIOS.

Same issue..
X270, latest BIOS (1.37)

As soon as the external battery is unclipped, works fine.

Connect it to power then remove, works fine.
Using throttlestop, disable BD PROCHOT, works fine

Boot up whilst external battery is connected, unusable.

Plenty of people talking about the same issue with T470 which was supposedly fixed with a BIOS fix.

Yep. Exactly like mine. I went back and forth with multiple Lenovo support techs for weeks and they even sent an onsite technician twice to swap the mainboard and more.
Nothing helped and after multiple reminders and pushing them for weeks they finally escalated my case multiple levels until someone agreed to replace the entire machine. I have gotten an X390 as a replacement and luckily this one works well.

Apparently this issue is quite isolated so Lenovo hasn't really cared to release a bios update. If anyone else is having this issue, there's no point in trying to solve it. Myself and multiple lenovo techs nearly went crazy trying everything to solve this, the only solution is to get another machine. Contact Lenovo or claim a new with insurance.

That is super disappointing, but not at all surprising.

I was looking for x390's last night, but honestly after this I am now a little hesitant.

Opened a support case, very likely going to be in vein.

Guessing because there isn't as much noise being made over the x270 issue as there was the t470 it is being ignored. All sign point to BIOS issue especially with how the T470 went.

any feedback on the X390?
I was looking at a x390 or x395.
Shame there is no onboard ethernet/NIC as that is important to me.

This battery/throttling issue is ridiculous tho.
Glad i found this thread about it, confirms i'm not crazy and there is actually an issue
