X280 Survives a 50mph fall!

Yesterday: I had a 'senior moment' and left my X280 on the edge of my truck-bed which is about 5" wide. More than 2 miles down the road, after 3 right-angle turns and at a speed of 50mph the laptop finally fell onto the road and skidded into the dirt/weeds. I found it 90 minutes later, closed, with a light coating of dirt and sand. When I opened it up I saw that the touch pad was missing and I found that about 10 feet away. The short story is, everything works! Not a scratch or scuff on the display or keyboard, relatively light scratches on the top and somewhat more severe scratches/abrasion on the bottom. It must have landed flat on the bottom where the deepest scratches in the metal are, but from the scratches on top it spent at least a moment upside down too. No dents or deformation anywhere.

This machine was a 2018 Christmas gift from my son, so pretty new and he'd purchased an extended warranty. Sadly, I figured the accident likely voided the warranty so I did the internal cleaning myself. I have alot of experience with such operations and the service manual was available online so it was a simple operation.

I wonder. . . has anyone else any experience 'testing' the build quality of these laptops?

Pretty impressive test you did there! Smiley Happy  Double check your warranty. If your son was feeling extra generous maybe he included ADP (accidental damage protection), in which case the damage would be covered by the warranty. Fingers crossed!

Thanks, I did look that up online and it turned out to be just an extended-duration standard warranty.

Re: X280 Survives a 50mph fall!

I had a similar experience with a ThinkPad Yoga 260 that my colleague first of all left it on the car roof during a rainy night, and then on their way to work, it slid off and hit the asphalt really hard. It was scuffed to oblivion and the display didn't light up at first, but the machine ran just fine and everything else was working.

Good stuff!

Cheers,
Atli Jarl.
