X300 GSM SIM modem

2008-05-13, 22:21 PM
Please forgive me I am indeed a newbie and while i love technology and use it everyday, I just dont have the time to truly understand the inner workings of this machine.

Basically I'm trying to be mobile and connected. I live in Thailand and we have very little access to WIFI connections. I need to use my X300 to connect to the internet via GPRS/EDGE connection over my GSM phone. I would like to simply be able to insert my SIM card from my phone into the SIM card slot on the X300 and be able to connect to the internet, make calls, SMS texts, etc. Is this possible? I sont see any applications or documentation regarding this.

Any help or directs to find ifo would be greatly appreciated
Regards,
Blair

I have the exact same issue here. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X300 (Type 6478 Model A13).
This laptop does indeed have a SIM card slot underneath the battery. Being a relatively brand new laptop in this region, i can't seem to find any documents or solutions that would help me.

Yours is a slightly different model but perhaps you could try what I've tried.

1) Restore to Factory State using the bundled recovery DVDs
2) Search the net for Vodafone Mobile connect application and see if it recognizes the device
3) Use the driver download pages on Lenovo website and try either HSDPA or EVDO drivers (you'll find them in the list for your notebook)
4) Verify your BIOS settings and ensure that the wireless modems are enabled

No matter what I try, windows vista simply cannot "see" the built-in modem. There is no trace of it anywhere. PC-Doctor reveals only the Intel 4965AGN adaptor and the Bluetooth Adaptor. The device itself is enabled through the BIOS and the security setting is also "Enabled". I am very tempted to try Windows XP just to see if it's a Vista issue or a Notebook/Hardware issue.

If anyone has any alternate solutions please let me know. This is the main reason I bought this laptop because I travel a lot and it seems that this has been a very expensive waste of time.

It would seem that in both of your models the SIM card holder is present but not the WWAN module required for UMTS etc.
I would suggest looking on your country's Lenovo site to see if an appropriate module is offered as an optional extra. You can obtain the spare part numbers from the Hardware Maintainance Manual, if you go this route ensure you choose the correct module which can be used in your region.
Once installed you can use Access Connections to manage connections.

Your X300 didn't come with a WWAN card, so that's why you can't find it!

Re: X300 GSM SIM modem

Thank you everyone. At least now i don't have to break my head trying to troubleshoot a problem when there isn't one to begin with. But i do think it's unfair/misleading for Lenovo to provide a SIM card holder when the actual WWAN unit isn't there! Now it looks like i'll have to pay extra for this component and i'll have to get an external 3G/GSM modem to use temporarily while i wait for the Lenovo one to arrive. And it'll have to be an external USB one because this laptop doesn't have a PC-Card slot  LOL!

I am in the Philippines and will be asking a friend to buy an x300 for me in the US... I wanna be sure I can use the SIM slot and use the 3G and HSDPA connection of our local phone company here in the Philippines. Is there a SIM lock (restriction to Verizon / AT&T) on this SIM slot device?

What OS do you recommend?

Re: X300 GSM SIM modem

It is confirmed that X300 in Thailand does not come with WWAN module. I have already open it up and see with my own eye there is no GSM module under the keyboard.(next to the backup battery) My question is can I order the express module from Sierra Wireless modle MC8775 or Do I have to order it from Lenovo model FRU 42T09091. I seem to be the same thing but I heard that if you don't get it from Lenovo you will have problem with BIOS.  Buying from Lenovo is much more expensive. If I buy from Sierra will it has the FRU problem or is it 100% compatible. Can I get this part in Thailand ? I have been searching but no luck. I don't think it has been approved by the communication authority of Thailand.
As soon as I got the answer for this I will go out and buy the x300

Re: X300 GSM SIM modem

I don' t think there' s anything unfair about Lenovo providing a sim-card slot but not the WWAN Module. I am 100% sure YOUR X300 wasn' t advertised to come with WWAN support. If you still get the sim-card-slot, why bother? Nice feature. You save the extra price for the slot when upgrading to WWAN later. In fact, WWAN antennae is also already builtin! This isn' t the case in other ThinkPad Models. So with the X300, you get in fact more!

Every (!) X300 has the card slot. Think about production costs. At least that' s what all Manufacturers do. In this case, it seems cheaper for Lenovo to put the card-slot in every X300 instead of only the ones wo will actually come with the WWAN Module (More production lines needed perhaps, to distinguish the models etc.). Same situation we often have in car industry. Its cheaper for them to built in the whole cable tree, but with cheaper models some wires just aren' t connected because they don' t have this or that electrical feature of the car.

So: Just look up the part number of the Vodafone (3G/UMTS) WWAN card in System Parts List, stick it in and you' re ready to go!
