X300 XP SP2 2GB RAM super slow graphics w/20+ MB .ppt files

2008-07-08, 15:01 PM

When I open large powerpoint files - we do powerpoint and word presentations of 10-80 pages with photos and pictures in them - the screen is very slow to update and manipulating objects involves continuous jerky screen freezes

THis is not an issue with similarly sized Excel, Acrobat files.  Is this really just b/c the x300 has a super slow processor/poor graphics capability??  My old Dell D620 (c. 2006) laptop handles these files fine

Any ideas?  At the moment, this essentially renders the laptop useless...

Thnx in advance

Is this file held in the X300's SSD or on an external conventional hard drive? If it's the SSD, I would try to get a conventional type drive and run it through the USB port. If it works, you know that there's a problem accessing this kind of data with an SSD. Not that I can see any good reason why there would ba a problem with either the data on an SSD or passing to data to the X300 through a connection to an external memory device.

i've opened 200+MB files in photoshop CS3 without much of a complaint from the X300.   the intel GMA X3100 borrows system memory and can use up to 384MB total when necessary.   this is more than enough for 2D applications like powerpoint.

something must be going on with powerpoint.   unfortunately, i'm not sure what to suggest as a cause or solution.

Stupid question... but what version of Office do you use?

I noticed Office 2007 files (.pptx) to be very slow... much slower than traditional files....
