X300

2008-04-04, 17:07 PM

I've been a loyal Thinkpad owner for about six years. I owned a few models (R31, T30, T41, T42p, T60, X60t) and been pleased with them all. My new X300 has arrived which I plan to use alongside my 15" T60. I loved the T41 and T42p (14" models) for the blend of power and portability.

The newer T60 14" models are just not as well packaged with the large (offset, yuk) screen surround and higher weight. I went for the 15" which is a great laptop, but heavy and cumbersome compared to the T42p, which had a high res 1400x1050 panel.

Initial impressions of the X300 are very positive, it fills the power user (decent sized high res. screen/SSD) requirements of the T4x series of laptops and moves the game on by being much lighter and thinner, with a far higher quality display. The 1400x1050 was a little hard on the eyes due to a lack of brightness; the X300 is crystal clear. My only real concern is the CPU, I've yet to really hammer it, but 1.2 Ghz is a big step down from the 2.2 T60. I'll try and post an update in a couple of months. Hopefully Lenovo will release a (much)  faster SKU in the future as Intel sort the packaging on the Centrino mobile SKU's. Clearly thin is the new black in laptop design.

The final point is the lack of weight makes it feel less solid than previous Thinkpad's. Only time will tell if its as robust.

Overall I'm absolutely delighted that Lenovo have released a genuine replacement for the old T4x series of laptops which has an executive 'look and feel' and is lightweight. I'd been really disappointed with the T60 widescreen series and considered buying another brand. I'm a happy customer at the moment.

Let’s hope Lenovo keep up the innovation!

I agree, the X300 is great. Did you get the 3-cell or 6-cell battery and what kind of battery life have you been getting so far?

I unfortunately gave my X300 a drop off the bed onto floorboards recently. It's completely fine though so it's rather robust :)

Six cell. I've done no testing as such, but initial impressions are OK, not great. Seems about the same as my T60 (with the nine cell I believe - sticks out the back) not as strong as a x60t (with a six cell) I used for a few weeks whilst aboard, which was fantastic giving a genuine four/five hours under hard use. I'm planning to get the battery which fits in the DVD drive bay in the next few weeks.
