X301 - Issue with Ericsson F3507G

2010-01-26, 11:51 AM

Hiya, First post so I hope somebody can help a newbie?

I have got a Lenovo ThinkPad X301 running Win XP Pro SP3 fully patched and all Lenovo system updates run. All very well and good although I have a none-disruptive yet very annoying issue in that the notebook constantly sounds the usb connect/disconnect noise (de dum - der dum).

I have found the problem to be the Ericsson Mobile Internet device as in Device manager this comes up and disappears in tandum with the noise. I have unistalled/reinstalled the device, disabled/renabled, updated the drivers, manually installed the drivers ect ect but nothing I seem to do resolves the problem.

Is there anybody else out there who has experienced this issue or knows how to fix it? I have logged a warranty support call with Lenovo but they suggested I remove the device - useless!

Yours hopefully,

Iain

Can you tell me when the USB connect/disconnect sound started? Was it after you updated windows or drivers? Was there some other event that you can tie the start of this behavior to?

If it was from the first day you booted the system, before all your updates with the original factory image, then I'd suspect it's either a bad WWAN module or some issue with the motherboard WWAN connector.

Narrowing this down to either software or hardware first will help.

BTW, I'm not in the Lenovo's service / support organization, just trying to help out here.

Try loading BIOS defaults. It's fixed stranger things than this...

Press F1 on startup, then once in BIOS press F9 (load defaults) then F10 (save).

System will reboot, see if that helps.

Many thanks your help with this. I don't have the laptop with me today (at work) so I will try resetting the BIOS settings tonight and will let you know the outcome.

Many thanks your help with this. I'm 98% certain it's a software problem as it didn't happen out of the box. I can't tie it down to one particular windows or system update as the laptop is constantly on silent. I only noticed it recently when I wanted to watch something on iPlayer and took the laptop off mute so could have been like this for months?

If you're thinking that a software update may have started this, then I'd susped something in the USB stack. Could have been a chipset driver or USB update on the operating system. You could reinstall the chipset driver from Lenovo's web site as a trial.

Do other USB devices work okay?

All the other USB devices work fine.

I think I'm just going to rebuild and upgrade to Windows 7.

Thank you all for your help.

I have decided to upgrade my Lenovo ThinkPad X301 to Windows 7 Ultimate Edition. I want a new/clean installation but to keep the recovery partition. Is there a way to do this?

I have saved all my files & folders to a USB HDD. The question is, shall I now run the ThinkVantage rescue & recovery console and then run the Windows 7 upgrade from there of shall I just format the HDD and install Windows 7 on the new partition? Another option would be to run the recovery disks before upgrading to Windows 7

Many thanks for your anticipated help!

Iain .

Hi, I have same problem with a T400s and Windows 7. The module is not being powered on by either windows or the bios. When I boot into Ubuntu 9.10 linux is works like a charm. When I enable it in linux and then reboot into windows the card works. After suspend in windows or poweroff it stops working again.

Searching on the net I found many many others with same problem. I also didn't find any solution from a updated driver.

Cheers
