X301......Remove XP, install Vista Ultimate ?

2009-01-17, 22:39 PM
Hello  My brand new X301 will be arriving in a few days.  It comes with XP.  I would like to install Vista Ultimate.  What is the best way to install Vista Ultimate and all of the drivers. Does Lenovo make CD's which are specifically designed for a clean install of Vista Ultimate with all of the factory settings specific to the X301?    I'm not very tech savvy, so I am looking for the easiest and most thorough way to transition to Vista Ultimate. Thanks, Charles

As your X is new, contact Lenovo tech support for their advise, not this forum as they typically have an order of steps to accomplish an upgrade.  That's the cleanest method.

Go slow you can make a real mess of things if you are not systematic.

Thank you for your suggestion. It seems like a good approach. (I'll especially heed to the part about being systematic).

Can I ask why you want to remove XP and install Vista instead?

As I plan to use this computer for the next 3 years or so, I would prefer to start out with an operating system that will keep up with the latest software and hardware products as they become available over the next few years. I've also heard that Vista, with the service pack 2, is more stable than XP.

Well, installing Vista is not that hard esp. for Lenovo machine.

What I could recommend you to do--if you are willing to spend sometimes do this yourself--is downloading 'System Update' application and WiFi or Ethernet driver in a flash drive or something you can use after finished installation.

Then if your ethernet or Wifi is already working, you just have to install System Update and run it. You will be asked to choose every drivers/applications which are available for your machine. After this point, everything will be automatically.

You'll be all set.

Ohh I forget to mention something--ThinkVantage Recovery partition will be gone/useless[since it is XP!!] if you don't have Vista recovery DVD from Lenovo, but it is not a big deal if you don't use it. If you are willing to do yourself, you can ask again what to do after getting new X301. :smileyhappy:

Thank you very much for your helpful input.  I really appreciate you taking the time to post.  I will be installing Vista using the disks purchased from Lenovo.  I imagine that most of the drivers are contained on the disks.    After the install I intend to update the drivers through the Lenovo websites.  Again, thanks for your guidance.
