X301 XP BSOD with iastor.sys

2008-12-01, 14:34 PM

I have an x301 (4057-W2M)

Am getting regular (4/5 times a day) crashes calling iastor.sys.  Have updated the Intel Matrix Storage Manager  (which contains iastor.sys) to its latest level (12/09/2008) but no resolution.

Thanks in advance with respect to any other ideas ?

(Am running XP with SP3)

Re: X301 XP BSOD with iastor.sys

I got this x301 (2776-P8U) about a month ago and the first day I got it I started having these issues. What did it for me was installing MSN Live messenger 8.1.  Once that was installed, the bloody thing started acting up after the first reboot.  I turned off a windows service for MSN messenger called Messenger Sharing Folders USN Journal Reader service.

This did a couple things.  It stopped the constant hard drive activity that would not stop and I suddenly had better performance from the system.  It also stopped the rebooting from 4 or 5 times a day to about once maybe twice a day.

I went to intels site and downloaded the iastor to replace the one from lenovo.  It actually helped a lot.  Instead of 4 to 5 times a day it happens maybe once or twice a week now.

It is an improvement but it is still really upsetting me as it happens right in the middle of something important.  The other issue I am having is the machine will restart on me.  It does not Blue Screen but restart like I click on restart from the start menu.  That also happens a couple times a week for no apparent reason.

I opened up a case with Lenovo and they did not do anything useful.  They have never seen either of these issues but I was not surprised as I got one of the first ones shipped so there could not have been that many cases for them to gather the experience in this annoying problem.

I would really be interested in knowing what can be done to correct this forever as the last few systems coming from Lenovo have been crappy to say the least.  T500's reboot and freeze up if you enable the fingerprint software and the x301 is rebooting all the time.

hope someone from Lenovo has a better option to fix this as I am starting to get frustrated with the quality of the product, especially when you are spending this kind of money on a system.

I am experiencing the exact same problem, blue screen approx once a day. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try this as a Lenovo field tech had this suggestion.  Go into the BIOS "F1" and change the hard drive setting to "Compatibility" from its current setting.

Also I would advise against loading drivers outside of those that are published by Lenovo.

I'm having the same problem.  I have had about 5 restarts in the last 24 hours since the installation of the most recent BIOS update.  I was hoping that this update would fix some of the problems I am having, not create brand new ones.

XP with Service Pack 2.

You can not change the setting to "compatibility" without re-installing XP. I hope there is a better solution.

Same problem here! Very annoying!

After updating the BIOS and the Intel Matrix Storage Manager because I hoped to get rid of the freezes, I now get both freezes AND blue screens.

By the way, I talked to a Level 2 Lenovo tech and he said that the hard drive compatibility fix won't work.  The x301 has a solid state hard drive and that setting should have no effect.

After two weeks of no crashes, it crashed again yesterday. I just can't get a pattern on why/when it happens. I guess I will have to wait until there are more units out there (and therefore more occurences of it happening to drive a solution).
