X301 with WWAN issues

2008-10-29, 23:47 PM

Hey all -- first off, I will start my first post by saying I just received my new x301--it is a configured model to be completely maxed out.  I am a long time user of ThinkPads and so far I'm really enjoying what I have in my hands.

Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when I began experiencing issues with my Verizon WWAN.  When I first got my computer, I had my ESN changed from my PC5750 PCMCIA card to the MEID of the laptop.  I went through the activation process and everything went smooth.  Yesterday, however, I attempted to connect to the WWAN and was unable to.  I went into Access Connections and attempted to connect again... every time I try to connect, I tells me that the WWAN card is not activated.  I am brought back through the Mobile Broadband Connect utility to Sign up again and activate the card.  Everything seems to go through just fine (and then I am able to see the signal bars for Verizon); however, whenever I attempt to connect, it tells me the WWAN is not activated.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

No worries, there is a way to activate outside of the Lenovo app to get you back on line.  Then you can use the prior steps when you don't get a connection.

Go to this link and download Verizon's Access Manager http://www.vzam.net/download/download.aspx

Choose the proper download as "built in" / Lenovo / Qualcomm / Drivers did not come with system / enter any phone number or your wireless if you know it (that is from memory but should be close).

Run the Installation and Open

Once open hit CTR + D (hidden activation process)

Type in 6 zeros as the password

Password on next screen is 6 zeros as well.

Unit should activate as you watch.

Finally on the top tab of access manager you should see Options.  Here also select activate.  This will download a list of local Verizon towers so you'll get the best connection.

Same problem with (2) X301's.

The problem seems to be the Qualcomm Verizon Drivers and Lenovo's Access Connections.  Do you also notice that your WAN radio light comes on after a reboot even tough the radio is off?

The Qualcomm GOBI drivers are new to Lenovo, our laptops have the initial release and we are anxious for the next version.

This WAN card is pretty cool as it can do two networks, basically USA and Europe.  Verizon uses the MSID and if you go to Europe you can add a SIM (under the battery) and work on their GSM network.  That's why you will see two profiles in Access Connections, Verizon and Verizon International.

WORKAROUND...

If you select the International profile your screen will say "initializing for GSM" and you will hear the Windows hardware sound as it disconnects and connects the card.  Once you hear this cancel the process.  Select Verizon (standard) and the process will initialize again for the local Verizon network.  You should find that you will now connect.  This works every time for me.  It's a hassle for sure and I hope Lenovo takes note.

I believe the driver problem is a failure to properly initialize the WAN car before applying the connection profile.

Best of luck!

aselgat, thank you very much for that information and possible workaround.

I brought my x301 with me to work today so I will power it on in a few moments (after I get another cup of coffee!) and see if that workaround will allow me to connect.

Again, I appreciate your response and will reply back shortly.

Ok after loading up the laptop and trying your workaround, it's either not working for me or I am doing something wrong.

I opened Access Connections, told it to connect to Verizon International... it showed that it was initilizing the device for HSDPA/GPRS and I heard the disconnect and reconnect noise from Windows--once I heard the reconnect noise, I immediately stopped applying the International profile and told it to connect to the normal Verizon profile--I am able to see the signal bars temporarily and it then shows its initilizing the device for EVDO/1x... After a few moments it then pops back up saying the device is not activated.

I went through the activation process again, and then performed the above steps.  I was still unable to get connected via WWAN.

I've already transferred my account from the PCMIA card so I definitely need to get this working!

On to your other question... Yes I do notice that my WWAN light is on after a reboot, even though I have turned the radio off.

Just to update, I did what was recommended by Mark.  I installed the VZAM software, activated it through that software (and updated the PRL), and then closed the VZAM software and connected just fine through Access Connections.

I will reboot a few times and disconnect/reconnect to see if I'm still getting the original issues with AC.  After all looks well I will select your answer as the solution.

Thanks a bunch, Mark -- I really appreciate your help in helping me getting me connected via WWAN!

So far all is well -- I haven't received the message about the WWAN card not being activated.

Thanks again, Mark.

Lenovo -- As Mark has already mentioned, this is now three _known_  x301 (and I'm sure much more) that are experiencing these issues.... Please come out with a fix!

Re: X301 with WWAN issues

Glad it worked out.

In access connections under the Verizon profile under "Advanced Otions" there are a few cool tools  One I use to automatically connect to my office VPN after successful WWAN connect.  The other, powering off the WWAN radio when another network connection is made.

Mark

Except for the driver issue (LENOVO PLEASE FIX) the x301 is an awesome machine, remarkably fast too!

Just out of curiousity, has anyone heard any update on a resolution or driver update?  I have ongoing problems with both Access Connections and the Verizon software, especially after returning from sleep mode.

Re: XA with WAN issues

2008-12-01, 20:51 PM

As of today Lenovo has not put forth any new drivers to solve these errors inherent in all X301's with Verizon WAN.

I check daily for new UNDP WAN Drivers and/or an updated version of Access Connections but none have surfaced.

Either or both of these pieces of software are responsible for the extreme hassle we are all having with our WAN connections.

LENOVO ARE YOU LISTENING?
