X390 Excessive fan running when plugged in

2019-07-18, 23:18 PM

Brand new X390. Noticed very active/excessive fan spin when the unit is plugged into charger (but not operating under particularly high system load).  The fan quiets considerably under the same system conditions when I unplug the charger cable (only run on battery).

I saw this post referencing an older operating system version -- appears to be the very same issue.

I'm running:

Intel i5 8265U 1.6 GHZ

Windows 10 Pro 1809

Suggestions?

Thanks!

Quick update: Day 3 operation and feel confident this is a setting issue.  Fan continues to run excessively, but the second I unplug the charger, it goes quiet.

Any ideas to help?  My call into Lenovo (not particularly informed rep) ended with a suggestion to do a return.  Surely, there's a better option than that?

I'm having the same issue - while plugged in the fan speed is insane, and my usage is essentially idle, but there is quite a bit of heat coming out. So it appears something is running while its plugged in, cause as soon as I unplug, while contiuning the exact same work the fan goes straight to idle and the machine is awesome.

I have the same exact problem.  I purchased a brand new Thinkpad X390 Yoga in December 2019 with an 8th Gen i7 processor and 16 GB of memory.  When plugged in, the fan runs regardless of the system workload. As soon as the power cable is detached, the fan reverts to a more normal running cycle (i.e. it rarely turns on).

Were you able to find a fix for this?

Thanks.

Were you able to find a solution that better control the Lenovo x390 fan when plugged into the AC adapter?

I have same issue with Linux Manjaro. Before this new brand, I had CarbonX1, 3rdGen. It was completely silent. The X390 Yoga is a total noise in comparison to my old Carbon X1.
