X390 Installed Windows 10 Version 2004 update KB4566782 Caused BSOD

2020-08-13, 17:00 PM

Hi All,

Today I've updated Windows 10 version 2004 on Thinkpad X390 to patch Tuesday Windows update KB4566782.

It broke a few things on Thinkpad X390, mainly related to virtualization related, not sure other has experienced it.

  1. I got BSOD when boot into Windows (at login screen), it complaint about acpi.sys error. I tried boot into safe mode and it is working fine. Trying to figure where to get he driver on this, but no luck.

I did find out what caused this error. When I disabled Intel Virtualization Technology in BIOS, it's working as usual. When I enable it back, when boot into Windows will get BSOD error again, the BSOD appear when Windows loaded into login screen

Disabling Intel Virtualization Technology in BIOS allow me to use the machine as usual (for hours), but as a developer I cannot work without WSL2. Hence it's a an issue to me.

2. After upgraded to KB4566782, the sound is not working. The drivers are there but it said no output device has been detected.

Error said No Audio Output Device is installed

But in device manager, Sound, video and game controllers look good.

3. Another issue related to Intel Virtualization Technology as well. If Intel Virtualization Technology is enabled and Intel VT-d Feature is disabled. I cannot boot into windows, it's stuck at Lenovo Boot up Red Logo and hanging there not responding on anything.

Temporary Resolutions

I've uninstalled KB4566782, my machine came back to normal, sound is back on.

Intel Virtualization Technology enabled and Intel VT-d Feature disabled also able to boot into windows as usual. (As I am typing right now)

Found it is an annoying issue, it break so much of things related to virtualization enabled in BIOS.

For now I will pause windows update. Please share if you experience the similar problem.

Below screenshot is after uninstalled KB4566782

Guys see this post: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile-Workstations/Lenovo-Vantage-Crashes-on-Windows-10-May-2004-Update/m-p/5030515?page=3#5123682

Essentially turn off Enhanced Biometric Security in Security > Virtualization in the BIOS.  All will be good with world!!

Same for me and my X1 Extreme Gen2.

It breaks my IR Windows Hello camera too.

BSOD ocurrs also when I run Lenovo Vantage app.

Uninstalling the update fixes the issue.

I am using X390 and I have the same issue here (BSOD, no audio device, etc.). I have to restore my system to pre-update status and suspend windows update for now.

Luckly, windows creates restore point before updates.

Keep in mind you can also uninstall manually only the faulty update in Windows Control Panel (Add/Remove programs).

How do we report to Lenovo on this?

It doesn't happen to my Lenovo Ideapad S410P and home PC, both also patched and upgraded to KB4566782

Some of my colleagues are using Dell were able to successfully upgraded to KB4566782 without any issue.

It seems like problem is at Lenovo Thinkpad side?

In my case, BSOD refers to ldiagio.sys, wich is part of Lenovo Vantage. I think it's related to Windows 10 2004 Update. This weekend I am going to wipe up this 'sort of' computer and reinstall Windows 10 1909.

If not because of WSL2 I would also go back to Windows 10 version 1909 :)

Same here on my X1 Gen2.  BSOD with update if I remove it works fine.

I had the same issue with the optional update from a few weeks ago, I also removed and it worked I though the official update would fix but obviously not.

I'm also running Hyper-V and virtualization and WSL2, might all be related indeed.  For now I've reverted back and will monitor to see if it's a driver/patch issue.

I'm we are on the same issue, disabled Intel Virtualization Tech in BIOS thing work as normal.  I'm not sure whether it's Windows/Thinkpad issue, because I have Ideapad patched to latest, WSL2 and all working fine.
