X395 RAM Performance

2020-01-19, 3:31 AM

I purchased an X395 with 16GB DDR4 2666Mhz RAM with AMD Ryzen 5 Pro. Understand that Ryzen 5 only supports up to 2400Mhz. Using CPU-Z, the RAM frequency only gives me a Single 933Mhz (i.e. Dual 1866Mhz). Performance on Speccy is worse at 299Mhz. Using Task Manager, it shows 2400 Mhz (See attached screenshot). So I am confused as to what is the actual performance of the RAM. Is anyone else facing the same issue or has a more accurate method of measuring? Or perhaps I am going about this all wrong.

Thanks.

I got similar information (only the brand is different) from SiSoftware Sandra.

Logical/Chipset Memory Banks

Bank #0 : 16GB DDR4 17-17-17-39 6-56-18-9 1T

Bank #2 : 16GB DDR4 17-17-17-39 6-56-18-9 1T

Multiplier : 6x

Min/Max/Turbo Multiplier : 6x - 12x

Integrated in Processor : Yes

Fixed Hole Present : Yes

Maximum Memory Bus Bandwidth : 37.5GB/s

Memory Module (Brand : Micron)

Model : 4ATS1G64HZ-2G6E1

Type : 8GB SO-DIMM DDR4

Speed : PC4-19200U DDR4-2400

Memory DC Line : 1.200V

Checking online (userbenchmarks), the RAM module does perform at 2666Mhz

The RAM performance has been limited by AMD Ryzen 5 to 2400Mhz and, I suspect, by the manufacturer to perhaps lower (1866Mhz) for maximising efficiency / battery life or something.

Also there is no RAM setting available in the BIOs to adjust it.

Note: I am not seeking max performance, I am just trying to find out the actual performance.

With HWInfo, it seems to think that the GPU memory is going at 933MHz while the system RAM is going at 1200MHz.

I contacted Lenovo Technical support. In summary, they asked a few questions about the performance of the laptop, checking BIOS and updated drivers. Conclusion is no issue with the laptop but if I have a concern, bring the laptop to the service center for the technicians to have a look.

By the way, I ran Userbenchmark twice and received 2400Mhz on both occasions.

Hello,

When talking about the installed memory, DDR stands for Double Data Rate, which means means that the memory performs two operations per clock signal (oscillation), one at it's beginning, and the other at it's end.   So, while DDR4-2400"MHz" RAM actually operates at a frequency of 1200MHz, it performs two operations on a single clock signal  This gives the RAM an effective data rate that is twice it's actual frequency, e.g., 2400MHz.

Some programs will report the actual clock frequency, while some will give the "effective" clock frequency.

Thanks Aryeh. From my reading of the previous correspondence prior to your contribution, I don't believe anybody was being challenged, nor confused with the arithmetic to do with double data rate.

Good Day Aryeh,

Could you elaborate on which programs report the actual and which programs report the effective?

By the way, the 2 "operations" occur at the rising and falling edge of the clock cycle and not the beginning and the end.

Hello,

:  Please keep in mind that when questions are answered or comments are left in the forum, they may not just be written to help the immediate person asking the question, but to provide additional information, context, nuance and instructions to those that may come here searching for an answer through the forum or their favorite search engine.  Thus, we sometimes like to re-state the basics to help all those other people who are helped when the read the messages in the forum.

:  I have seen it in the past with CPU-Z, GPU-Z and UserBenchmark, to name a few off the top of my head.  It eventually gets solved when the author of the program updates it to read the values correctly from the new devices' chipsets or CPU.
