Re: X60 - Screen flickers and screen shutoff - problem with power management or hardware failure?

2008-12-15, 17:54 PM

Add me to the gang that appears to have found a work-around. I have an X60 with the latest BIOS and drivers but after rolling back the Intel video driver to version 6.14.10.4860, I have not experienced the screen black-out.

Previously, I experienced the blackout when running on battery and never when running on AC. I'm not sure that these occurrences were limited to wireless mode since that's the mode I'm usually on when I'm running on battery.

So it seems we need to look to Intel for a real solution. Mind you, we shouldn't rule out that Lenovo is the real culprit. It may be that their utilities (Power Mgr or whatever) are not complying with the specs stipulated by Intel for the video driver.

In any event, I think Lenovo now has some sufficient data/evidence to pursue the issue. The onus is on them to find a solution whether that means help from Intel or not.

I have just sent in my computer to have the hard drive re-imaged, video chips replaced, and wires....not taking any chances. Should the techs come up with a simplier answer, I will post it on this blog. Regardless, I will post when I have it returned and working.

Very, very unlikely, that this causes the problem...

How should the bad battery know, which driver is installed and when to behave good and when not?

The flickering could already be isolated by our forum users as related to a certain driver level,  when all this mess started.

STATUS IS STILL UNSOLVED

And of course it didn't occur to them to replace the battery with on from their workshop to see if they could try replicate your problem. It's easier to just send it back blaming un unrelated item.

Very poor service.

If you do decide to replace the battery and send it back, print this thread or at leat the posts where users have isolated to problem to a driver and send it in with the laptop.

Not looking good, I have attached my extended battery to see if the problem persists....same stuff! I have to wait until the New Year before a new 8 cell battery arrives to fully check it out. I bought if from Lenovo so i could demand a refund if the problem is not solved by replacing the battery. I am so tired of quick fixes without anyone checking to see if the problem is truly fixed. It takes a hour sometimes before it starts and I am sure no one in tech support gives it more than a few minutes.

Official Lenovo staff, please take this issue serious and help users and moderators ...

2008-12-20, 15:22 PM

Its especially disappointing, looking at how many people have this problem - given this board statistics is on of the main bugs that nerves the members... The initial problem statement has been read over 6.000 times, even now over 100 users still regularly read this thread. It has so many posts now and stays almost every time on top of the  X-Series Board.

I understand, its no "official" channel, although my ThinkVantage System Update gives absolutely this false impression (look at the extras: "Lenovo Forums" ) that this is some kind of official support forum.

I appeal again to the volunteering moderators, to forward this issue to Lenovo official support staff and ask for a serious feedback for us. Otherwise this forum would over time only cause frustration - for users and volunteering moderators.

If the forum can't find the solution to an obviously ThinkPad failure, official Lenovo please be interested and take over now!

And how do you know they didn't do this?

In bbreply to the question regarding checking the battery as a solution. On the webpage to track the repair, you can see how long the machine was worked on, AND it was not in the possession of the tech long enough to run the machine with a battery to see the flickering begin....my new battery has been shipped so I should have it on Monday or Tuesday.

Hi Nonny,

really - I wouldn't "pick up a fight" here ...

Please understand that the authors of the messages in this thread are a bit nervous now that it takes so long time to solve the problem and don't receive any real helpful feedback so far from Lenovo support. Any argument doesn't help to bring up a solution.

I would be more than happy if I'd received any comment on my suggestions in my last 2 threads about the forum policy from a moderator... or from Lenovo.

Why spending time arguing about this?
