Re: X60 - Screen flickers and screen shutoff - problem with power management or hardware failure?

2008-10-07, 10:46 AM

Hello,

I've got the same problem in the past for just several times. Now I switched to my 8 cell battery and found that the screen shut down occurs in battery mode more often. What I have realized is that the system still runs. I can hear music when I was listening and all keys still work. Putting the machine to sleep mode and wake it up again gives me a the picture back.

Now my system:

ThinkPad x60  170685G

Graphic:

 - There are two identical entries in my hardware manager (?)

- Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset Family

- Driver 15.02.2008 Version 6.14.10.4926

Display:

- Two entries ThinkPad Display 1024x768

-  Driver 09.09.2005 Version 3.0.0.0

Additionally I can say the display cable cannot be the problem, the Lenovo Service just replaced it after repairing my Bluetooth. I agree that the system is too expensive when the first faults occur after 12 months. When I bought it the first problem was a pixel problem in the display. Fortunately the Lenovo service came to my office and replaced it in 20 minutes, but in this case I would not like to do more experiments or send it to the repair. Its is my only machine and I need it to work. Otherwise Lenovo should change to lower prices and advises its customers to buy a new laptop after 18 months.  In my ears that sounds ridiculous.

I'm experiencing the same problem wit the screen flickering then going blank. Only happens on battery power and both on 4 cell and 8 cell batteries.

Video Chipset:  Mobile Intel 945 Express
Video Driver Version:  6.14.10.4926
Power Management Driver Version:  1.50
Thinkpad Power Manager Version:  1.43

Operating System:  Windows XP Pro SP2 with all updates as of 27/10/08.

What was the out come of examining the laptop you received to check?

Having same problem, only on battery power, on X60 1706-M8U, 8-cell battery, BIOS 2.14 (7BETD3WW), Windows XP SP2 and video drivers 6.14.0010.4926. Tried turning Intel Display Power Saving Technology off, made no difference.

Screen intermittently turns black (sometimes gray/blue) while on battery power but putting into standby and turning back on works immediately.

On my Windows Vista SP1 X60, the workaround I have been using is downloading the latest Intel drivers from their website, 7.14.10.1504 and force-installing them using the zip file, not the exe installer.  These drivers have solved the black/grey/blue outs that I used to get on battery power.

I've looked on Intel's site and I already have the latest driver installed. Anyone know where I can find the older drivers? This flickering and screen blanking is becoming irritating.

Lenovo, have you got any new for us? It's been a month now since you last posted anything here. What were your findings on the laptop you received for troubleshooting?

It seems the latest driver from Intel website for 945G Express Mobile chipset does work as previous poster has hinted at.

New version is:

7.14.10.1504

Here is the url for Vista 32bit installer for those that dont want to go through 10 confirmation screens on Intels site:

Unfortuantely, that driver is only for Vista. The latest driver for XP which is the driver I currently have doesn't work. Also my chipset is the plain 945 express chipset. What's the difference between the 945 and 945G?

Re: X60 - Screen flickers and screen shutoff - problem with power management or hardware failure?

I have tried every fix suggested, and none work,

every versions of the chipset driver causes issues,

my only fix has been to unistall the intel driver, restart, cancel the install of any driver

and then run the laptop plugged into a 19" flat screen monitor,

I have to carry a flatscreen monitor everywhere I plan on using this piece of junk

and yess the laptop screen still lights once in awhile, and then it goes out, it is definately a driver issue in my eyes, it has to be

because with each verison of the driver there are difering results,   i can get it to work for 6-8 hours on the oldest drivers

but i am managaing with the monitor fix, the screen still flickers like crazy and about a 10th of what I type doesnt get on the screen due to these pauses,

but then again Lenovo still hasnt addressed this issue has it ?

what a crappy company

id be ashamed to work for a company such as that

I think you are projecting the blame on Lenovo which may be a bit misplaced. I think Intel is probably as much in this as Lenovo. It was the chipset driver that seems to cause all these issues. I dont expect Lenovo to vouch for every piece of code Intel produces. They probably dont even get to see the source code either.

In general the Intel 945 chipset is knows to be a piece of crap anyway. Its only now that we have the better Nvidia based laptops which you can buy now from Apple not sure about other manufacturers.

Try the install of the latest driver it seems to have worked for me. On Vista though. I had not seem that driver be available a few month ago so this is something new.
