X61 Sierra Wireless HSDPA MC8775 Modem & Vodafone Mobile Connect Compatability

2008-01-06, 18:52 PM
I've got a new X61 which had an internal 3G modem, the Sierra Wireless HSDPA MC8775. It comes with a Vodafone Mobile Connect application that should work with the modem BUT I can't get them to work together - the Modem drivers always seems to time out when I query the modem and the Vodafone application says it can't locate the SIM card.

I've udpated the Modem drivers from the Lenovo site to V2.0.13.0 dated 11/01/2007.

However Lenovo does not publish an application to manage the connection even though it sticks a Vodafone logo its hardware.

Vodafone list Vodafone Mobile Connect software - version 5.10.0020 (Last Updated: 28.06.06) as compatible with the X61.
I can't get this app to work with the drivers. It seems really strange that the listed compatible appication is so old.

Vodafone have a new version of their applicatuion. V9.1 Last Updated 12.02.07
Same problem here.

I've tired to get suport from Vodafone and they send me to Lenovo, likewise Lenovo send me back to Vodafone!

Has anyone managed to get the X61 with Sierra Wireless HSDPA working with Vodafone Mobile Connect in the UK. It so it would be great to hear what versions of drivers and applications you are using.

Or is there anyone at Lenovo who knows how to get this working. I would love to hear from you.

regards
   CHRIS

Don't bother about the vodafone sw, use access connections which came pre-installed. You can turn wwan on and off using the Fn F5 key combination

Thanks Andy. I've tried F5 but it only shows Bluetooth and WiFi. The 3rd Radio (HSDPA) does not appear. Does F5 show 3 radios on you laptop?

chris(5w),
FYI, I don't have a TP with UMTS at the moment, (sold it on 31 dec.), but have set up several for other people.
Can you look in device manager under COM and LPT, and also under Network devices and check that windows can't turn them off in their properties and that you have no exclamation or question marks.
There is also a hardware switch under the front edge of your TP, please ensure that it is turned on.
Please also add your type and model number to your sig.

Thanks.  I installed Vodafone V5.14.0016.0 after first removing the old version and it works perfectly with the current drivers.

Great job. Thanks.

I've not tried Vista but with XP VMC 9.2 did not recognise the hardware.  I went to V5.14.0016.0 which looks like a different client that works with the Sierra hardware. You can download from the link in the thread above.

Re: X61 Sierra Wireless HSDPA MC8775 Modem & Vodafone Mobile Connect Compatibility

2008-08-14, 14:39 PM

I did have some issues when installing XP on a X61s, Type 7669-A49.

This model is shipped with the Sierra Wireless HSDPA MC8775 Modem.

I was able to identify the maker from the "Device Instance Id" (USB\VID_1199&PID_6813\5&2F494F2B&0&1) in Device Manager, but the rest was sheer luck (and to some extend: this thread (btw:thanks2Uall)).

I used http://www.pcidatabase.com/ to do this search.

My task was to add the drivers to our SMS2003 based Zero touch deployment, so I was on the lookout for all the plain driver files.

1) Unable to find driver.
I was unable to find the correct driver using the driver Matrix. Two drivers were listed, but it was none of them... :smileymad:
I succeeded by using System Update and extracted the file from the system update repository folder.

I extracted the file to a TEMP folder, finding an MSI :smileysad:.

After verifying that this setup did contain the driver I needed, I extracted the driverfiles from the MSI packet using "UniExtract"

http://legroom.net/software/uniextract.

2) Connection configuration

- Using HyperTerminal, I connected to the "AT Command Port" of the MiniPCI adapter. (See Serial# in Device Manager)

- By sending the string: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet" to the modem, I hardwired the APN of my datacarrier into the modem (Replace the [internet] with the APN of your own carrier.).

- Finally, I created an ordinary Dialup connection, dialing the number *99***1#.

Viola: I can connect to the internet by simply clicking an icon. :smileyvery-happy:

Cons: I don't have access to ANY other feature. I can't see signal strength, traffic stats and such.(unless I start using AT commands)

Pros: Simple, Easy, no software to maintain, minimum amount of memory overhead.

Note1:

The AT command used, is from a standard GSM AT command set, and can be used with most wireless modems.

Note2:

I think that there are some brilliant peoble out there that have made some free applications to monitor such wireless modems, but I don't remember where. I guess you'll just have to try a search if you need it.

Note3:

I assume you can do this even with Vodafone installed, and then just start and use the software when you need access to advanced features of the modem. I would expect AccessConnections to block the serial port all the time.

Note4:

Instead of using HyperTerminal, it should be possible to add the AT command into the "Extra Initialization Commands" of the modem properties in Control Panel.
