X61 Vista machine drives not visible from XP machine.

From my XP machine I can ping the X61 Vista system but cannot see any shared drives.

Vista system has no trouble seeing shared drives on the XP machine.

Network discovery has been enabled.

Any ideas appreciated.

Re: X61 Vista machine drives not visible from XP machine.

Did you change the network to private network on Vista?

Shared folder will not be visible under public network.

Yes, network is private.

I'm in exactly the same situation. I've tried a variety of things that others on Vista support sites have suggested but to no avail. I'm on the verge of "solving" this problem by brute force: format the HD and install XP Pro.

As jwcane says, I can see my entire LAN from my X61s but no other PC (all running XP Pro) can see me. Sometime this weekend I intend to connect a [bless me Father for I am sinning Smiley Wink ] Dell desktop running Vista Home in order to see what each box can/can't see on the LAN.

Re: X61 Vista machine drives not visible from XP machine.

In conversations with knowledgeable persons it appears that this really is Lenovo's responsiblity as OEM license holder of the Vista system, which came preinstalled on my X61s. I spent about 40 m. in separate telephone calls to Lenovo support in Atlanta (800) 426-7378.

Lenovo referred me to a MS paper on networking, which describes a final step to "Prepare a networking disk for network client running systems other than XP" which I did. What one receives is a file called netsetup.exe. I moved that to my X61s and tried to run it, with the following result:

"Cannot Configure the Network Setup Wizard. An error occurred during the network configuration of this computer."

When I called back to the above telephone number, Lenovo replied that it is a configuration issue, that their responsibility, which they define as principally hardware-related, ends with a successful connection to the Internet.

If anyone knows of another support telephone number where issues such as this can be addressed, I would appreciate knowing same.

Re: X61 Vista machine drives not visible from XP machine.

I managed to resolve this on my X61s. Although I'm absolutely sure it was checked before it seems that File and Printer Sharing got turned off Smiley Surprised

1. Start -> Settings -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connection.

2. Click on Properties and then make sure that "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" is checked.

3. If it's not, check it, click OK, etc.

4. Reboot.

Hope that works for you as well as it does for me.

Re: X61 Vista machine drives not visible from XP machine.

Try to find the vista machine by its ip address. Make sure file sharing is enabled and check your firewall software.

Good luck

So it seems I'm notgoing senile after all. The same thing happened again today. The X61s became invisible on my LAN.

Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center shows file and printer sharing are on but in Network Connections, LAN, Properties, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks has become unchecded. I enabled it and all is well again.

Anyone have an idea about what might be turning off File and Printer Sharing?

Re: X61 Vista machine drives not visible from XP machine.

I found the problem. Access Connections is turning off File and Printer Sharing every time it starts.

Solution: launch Access Connections, click Location Profile, select the profile, check (if unchecked) Network security, click Settings, then uncheck "Disable File and Printer Sharing."
