X61S monitor issue

2015-07-13, 17:30 PM

Hi everyone,

I'm the happy owner of an X61S Thinkpad. Well, not quite happy at the very moment I must say.

I've had this laptop for quite a while already. In fact, I'm not using it as primary computer since 2012 or something. Recently I decided to convert it to some kind of HTPC.

Because it was becoming slower and slower, I decided to acquire a "cheap SSD" (almost succeeded). Thing is, I'm blind. And I didn't know my laptop's screen didn't work anymore. I think I've hit it somehow. The fact is, the integrated display is dead. The up-right corner allows  one to read a few lines but not the entire BIOS menu. Definitly not.

Thus the sighted friend of mine that's helping me out with the new install and I decided to connect an external monitor. ... Which did, sadly, not help. And this is my question: how can I force the laptop's output to be the external VGA monitor? We tryed both connecting it to the internal VGA and the docking station. nor worked.
My friend managed to enter the "BIOS > config > display" menu, but because of the broken display he can't see enough lines to make the change. We aren't actually certain of what's being displayed at all. It might as well be an error message of some sort...

So, if one has got a solution for me, I'd be the happiest guy on Earth for a second or two! Which is wonderful, isn't it? :p

Thanks!

Regards,

Chris

Hi Hemanth,

Thank you for your answer.

I could take a picture if that helps. But honestly you wouldn't see much. My description of the issue is pretty much it. I mean, I couldn't really give more details.

Regards,

tHc

Hi THc,

Thank you for the reply!

To check with external monitor you have to use VGA cable and then press Fn+F7 key to switch the display.

Can you check pushing the LCD front and back just to check if you get any changes in the screen?

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Cheers, will try fn+f7. I actually read about it in some random forum post yesterday but I thought it was only valid for Windows. As far as I remember, my friend tryed it and it didn't help but we'll try again. As for pushing the LCD, I already did, without doing anything except reducing the working zone of the lcd even more.

If it's just the corner, and has an irregular boundary that isn't purely vertical or horizontal, then chances are the LCD's been cracked.

See if tapping Win+P while in Windows gets the external display going.

Also try starting the machine in the docking station with the lid closed. This might force the laptop to use the external monitor.
