X61s Startup Processes

2008-07-17, 5:59 AM

Any advice on speeding up the boot process for the X61s?  Running Visa Business and it takes over 5 minutes to fully boot.  What processes are loading on startup that really do not need to be there?

I am working the same issue.  X61s.   Vista.  86 processes after it settles down.  That's absurd.

More later.

Hi David,

Welcome to the forums!

Vista is a rather peculiar operating system, in terms of its earlier sibblings, and is very demanding on systems. The many "new" features of Vista include OS-related resource hogs which any user can control without really sacrificing system stability or operability.

At present, on startup, Vista catalogues all files that were changed since last use, then begins a new process of indexing files for future "quicker" access.

I would suggest you turn off the following features:

- prefetch

- indexing service

Additionally, if you're using Lenovo's stock installed applications, I would suggest you remove Norton Anti-Virus (which is known to be resource hungry) and replace the AV with something which is available for free, such as AVG or Avast.

Next, not knowing how much RAM you have installed, the suggested amount of RAM for running Vista is 2GB.

Hope this helps!

Steve

Steve,

tnx for the insights.  I'll try those suggestions.

I have 3G mem and the turbo memory installed.

Have to say, never been a fan of Norton's security.  I left in on and running so as to create a baseline of sorts.  It won't last long.

Someone mentioned Access Connector leakage in another thread as well.

Today I installed a couple of dozen patches to the OS and to the drivers (automatic update) ... quite a few.  I'll see if that improves the performance.
