X61s with Intel 4965AGN - problem keeping connection

2008-05-23, 18:51 PM
Hello

Just picked up Trendnet N router supposedly capable of 300mbps.

http://trendnet.com/products/proddet...W-633GR&cat=66

Using its N card, I am seeing speeds above 200s.

On my X61s with 4965, the most I am seeing is 130 which I guess makes sense since my router is not 5ghz. However, I can't even seem to maintain 130. It often drops back down to 50s. Any idea what settings I can check to make sure?

Do I go as far as using thinpad connection software as opposed to just windows? I have Windows XP Pro

THank you in advance.

Make sure that the 4965AGN is set to "maximum performance" in both the Power Manager and Access Connections.

I will give it a shot - but where would I find this setting?  Under device mgr, there is no such setting to run at max performance.

Also checked out the Linksys wrt600.  Sure enough with 5ghz, 4965 will connect around 270mbps. However, after some video streaming, it went down to 160's.  Which is still not bad compare to Trendnet which started at 130 but dropped all the way down to 50s.

Is there any freaking router that works well with this 4965 chipset?

Wireless speeds quoted by suppliers are always advisory maximums, there are a host of variable site factors that may impact your achievable speed, including the other WiFi traffic in your vicinity.  You may find a tool like NetStumbler or VistaStumbler useful in understanding what your local wirless environment is like in terms of achievable signal strength and general WiFi traffic in the vicinity.

As far as power settings goes, there is one in the device driver for the 4965AGN, so you might want to have look again there.  There area also other settings that you (or may not) find in Access Connections and Power Manager depending on your specific operating system and utility load.

Cheers,

Thank you - I cheked the device manager but only setting I see is whether I want to turn this device off to conserve power as opposed to some setting for maximum performance.
