Yoga X380 - How To Enable GPS Function On Fibocom L850-GL WAN Card

2020-01-19, 13:37 PM

Greetings from Croatia to all,

My recently bought Yoga X380 has Fibocom L850-GL WAN card with GNSS ability.
Windows 10 LTSC 2019 ( Windows store enabled ) is installed with latest updates installed through windows update and Lenovo Vantage.

Before Yoga, I had T540p and T470p. On these machines W10 LTSB and W10 LTSC was used together with GPS-Direct utility and Windows Maps app.
What GPS-Direct app does is to map COM port used by GPS, and installs virtual GPS driver in the device manager.
In this way, on both of my older Thinkpads, GPS navigation was available, and Windows Maps app could use location provided by GPS sensor built into the WAN card.
------------------------------

When i tried to do the same on my new Yoga, only the COM7 port is available to be used by GPS-Direct, and once installed on COM7 port, no GPS data is available. - It behaves as if GNSS sensor is not working.
I have also tried another app which scans the COM ports for the available GPS devices. It locks onto the COM7 and after testing the response, no GPS sensor devices gets found.

It would really be great to have GPS functionality on this machine.
But what do you suggest for me to try in order to enable it ?

I have already tried to disable WAN from device manager, so that only GNSS sensor device remains.
Also, under Windows location settings, everything is enabled and rough location tracking is available through my IP address.

Thank you in advance for you help and suggestions
Dino

Hello,

To add more info:

By Installing the Fibocom WWAN card, two COM ports ( ports 3 & 6 ) are created in the device manager. Both of these are marked as usb to serial, and I have not found a way to connect to them.
Even if I change the port number of one of them, all of the GPS / Port scanning apps are unable to connect to that port.

Thanks
Dino

Welcome to the Community

Do all your apps use serial port with NMEA data, not sensor port the Windows provides?
Do you have Fibocom' "L8-Family AT Commands User manual"?

Thanks for the reply,

I am unable to find any option for switching between these two - both in Windows location settings, and settings menu for Windows Maps and VisualGPSView app.

VisualGPSView app has connect to GPS" option under tools menu. Here, COM 3.6 & 7 are available to select. COM 3&6 are marked as "USB Serial Device",and same as with Direct GPS, there is an error dialog ( unable to connect to specified communication port ) when attempting to connect to these two ports.

I am only able to connect to COM7 which is marked as "Intel Active Management Technology -SOL", but there is no GPS data coming through this port.

I have tried GPS port checker app in order to check for NMEA data coming through the ports:

COM 3 & 6 are marked as in use, while scanning the COM7 does not detect any NMEA data coming through.

---------------------

Really cant understand why the ports 3&6 are locked for me. I have tried checking what process is using these two ports by with ProcessExplorer app, but without success.

On both T540p and T470p setting up GPS through GPS direct app was straightforward procedure, but for some reason these ports are locked on Yoga with Fibocom card.

-------------------------------

I am have download the AT commands user manual.

Greetings

Dino

Inability to access to serial port might be caused by its feature - it allows the single connection only. Since you use additional drivers (GPS direct if I'm right) there might be a concurrent access attempt to NMEA serial port by the driver and your application.

Thanks,

I am unable to install GPS-Direct on COM-s 3&6. Every GPS reated app which I have tried returns the error to not being able to access these ports.

So it looks like something is already using/reservs  these ports, but even with aid of process explorer app, I am unable to determine what that is.

Do you think that this somethign that I can claim under waranty ? If not, I am conidering to replace the card with another model compatible with this machine, but dont know which models are compatible ( white-listed ).

Best

Dino

Could you show the content of (a)Ports and (b)Sensors categories in Device Manager? Any chance NMEA port is just absent in the system, at all? Are there any items in Other Devices category?

I don't think there is an issue with broken modem or something similar. From my side this issue looks like some setting missing or application/driver conflict.

T480s supports two approved Fibocom' wwan modems - L850-GL and L830-EB. According to the datasheet on the Fibocom' site the L830-EB' positioning features description looks as below:
GNSS:GPS/GLONASS*.
There is a non described asterisk at the end, you see that. According to the L830-EB' Hardware User Manual, at least v.1.0.3, this modem doesn't support positioning features

I was hoping for support for L860-GL or older WWAN cards such as the one I had in my previous Thinkpad ( Sierra Wireless EM7455) - Oh well...

Here are the photos. I have tried all the combinations: disabling the WAN, and leaving only the Location enabled, Enabling both WAN and Location with SIM card inserted. But funy thing is that I dont need WAN funcionality at all :)

Resault is always the same: COM-s 3&6 are unacesible, and Windows is using WiFi for location instead. Only thing that comes to my mind is to install the drivers for the same modem from Dell site. These are marked as WAN-GNSS drivers.

Greetings

Dino
