I'm expecting the next BIOS update to be the permanent fix for the fan and the keyboard backlight flickering.  I'm not sure when it will be released yet.  I really have no idea about the electrical noise.  It would probably be better to discuss it in a separate thread.

Hello someotherguy,

I talked about the electric noise issues I experience here (X1Y3): https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Yoga-3rd-Gen-Decreased-SSD-Performance-with-Thunderbolt-3/m-p/4060157#M84964 and another person here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-6th-Gen-Coil-Whine-Dock-Issues/m-p/4060071#M84955. Could you help us check if it's an issue that is being worked on? :D

Re: Yoga x1 3rd gen keyboard backlight flickering

Hi all,

I've been reading up on this thread and forum for a while - thanks for all the experience sharing and the workaround hints.

I have the same set of issues that have been reported on this forum:

- Keyboard backlight flickering

- Really bad fingerprint reader drift (basically the registered fingerprint becomes unusable within a couple of days/logins)

- Coil whine (constant crackling / light chirping, plus sometimes very loud chirping)

I already have a second X1Y3 (20LE) with exactly the same issues as the first one, which I had declared as DoA. I have reported the second as DoA as well, but I'm trying to hold back on the exchange since the third will most likely have the same issues.

I could maybe live with the coil whine, although it's annoying in a quiet environment. However, the keyboard backlight and fingerprint reader are basically broken.

Win 10 Pro fresh install, all the latest drivers, updates and BIOS.

Is there a separate specific thread for the fingerprint reader issues yet?

Cheers,

Bianco

I started a thread about the fingerprint reader a long time ago but nobody paid attention: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Yoga-3rd-Gen-Fingerprint-Sensor-Forgets-Enrolled-Fingerprint/td-p/3997333

keyboard backlight glitch on x1 yoga 3rd gen

2018-05-02, 3:51 AM

Just got my X1 Yoga 3rd generation.  Ran all Vantage updates and ran windows update.  Glitch occured when new and after installing all updates.

This is what i have observed.  IF i use the keyboard to rotate through the backlight options such as low, high, off and auto.  Low, off, and high work.  When put to "auto" light will not turn on.  IF I choose Auto in Vantage backlight will work.  BUT if I choose auto through cycling though the options (low, high, off, auto) keyboard backlight will not work.  If in auto from keyboard it will work after a reboot though.

@someotherguy would you mind posting the BIOS version when it comes out? I just installed 1.12 and am waiting to see if the issue comes back, but that was released a few days before your post so I wasn't sure if that was the fixed version.

Thanks!

Same problems here:

1) Keyboard backlight flickering

2) Really bad fingerprint reader drift (basically the registered fingerprint becomes unusable within a couple of days/logins)

Problems 1 and 2  existed from the start (BIOS 1.09) and still with the new BIOS 1.12

Keyboard flickering does not show after a reboot, but immediately after a start from an energy saving or suspend status.

3) Coil whine (constant crackling / light chirping, plus sometimes very loud chirping)

started with the nwe BIOS 1.12 (current status)

Very annoying

1.12 definitely has the problem. Did anyone notice that ThinkVantage still claims the bios version as 1.11 even after the 1.12 update? It feels like someone forgot to update a version number somewhere.

Somewhat related, has anyone successfully returned their Yoga for a refund after the 30 day return window? I've had mine for a few months but I regret my purchase more every day.

On My X! Yoga Think Vantage also shows Bios 1.11 after the update to 1.12.

The good new is, that the after a downgrad to Bios 1.11, the disturbing noise is gone.

Unfortunately not the keyboard backlight flickering and the nearly unusable working fingerprint reader.

I hope Lenovo will fix the issues soon, otherwise i will give the device back.

What a pity, overall a very capable device wirh an awesome display (WQHD HDR) but these annoying bugs really let me down. Especially when you think of the price tag.
