Re: Yoga x1 3rd gen keyboard backlight flickering - potential solution

2018-05-02, 21:25 PM

Here is what I think helped me so far

Restart the machine, press Enter for BIOS settings, go to the last page of settings and select "Load BIOS defaults" (or something like that). Be aware that after that to boot your Windows 10 successfully you need to enable CSP and set UEFI/Legacy to both, which in turn requires disabling Secure Boot on Security page. But I had to do it from the very beginning anyway.

After doing just that keyboard backlit does not flicker for me anymore!

Here is my theory behind the phenomenon we observed - new version of BIOS (1.12?) makes use of some additional bits of CMOS memory, which previous version did not use and left in random state. After BIOS update some people got unlucky having those bits in some weird state which confuses new BIOS and causes all kinds of weird semi-hardware issues. Loading the defaults sets those bits to the correct state and the problem disappears.

Please try it and let me know if my computer Woodoo still goes strong.

Did you try your solution after sleep? On normal boot i had never the problem. Always only after sleep.

P.S. Normally you should always load Defaults after Biosupdates, to prevent problems that new bios get settings and values from old bios. (CMOS and NVRAM)

Yes, it still works after sleep - no flickering!

Regarding "always load BIOS Defaults" - even those who know about it rarely bother, because most of the time it does not cause any trouble and saves time on reconfiguring BIOS from scratch, but this case apparently is the one when it matters.

@konste, can you maybe clarify which settings you need to change back in the BIOS to load Windows 10, after loading Defaults? For those people who may not be fully savvy moving around the BIOS, and may now know what the acronyms mean.

When you mentioned the 15 days period, does that time frame start when the laptop arrives to your doorstep or when you place the order of the laptop? I'm currently waiting for my unit (X1Y3) to arrive and curious if I should watch out for these issues stated in this thread..

Re: keyboard backlight glitch on x1 yoga 3rd gen

2018-05-03, 3:58 AM

I discovered something new today.  Somehow the keyboard backlight is tied to the intel graphics driver.  Vantage had updated the graphics driver to intel 23.20.16.4905.  With that driver "auto" keyboard backlight works with setting "auto" in vantage but if scroll though (low, high, off, auto) Fn+spacebar "auto" does not work.  I had disabled windows automatic hardware driver updates.  BUT when windows April update was installed last night it reverted to allow windows to update hardware drivers.  When that happened windows automatically updated the intel graphics driver to 23.20.16.4973.  With that driver the "auto" keyboard backlight quit working whether it was through vantage or fn+space bar.  I reverted to the old driver and disabled microsoft hardware updates.  The "auto" keyboard backlight worked again at least through vantage.  It still doesnt work through fn+spacebar.  So somehow the graphics driver intersacts with keyboard backlighting.

re: drivers - I wonder if there are issues with (generally) redundant drivers from MS/Lenovo competing for resources. I suggest that from years of recognizing issues involving hardware (functionality) that receives updates from 2 or more vendors associated with the product. The default missive in threads related to drivers goes "doesn't matter, you can pile driver upon driver, it shouldn't create issues" (also prevalent in threads about cleaning out old drivers from registry & related) but IRL a lot of the issues I've had that behaves like this (where it might work fine, breaks after update from one or other vendor) are specific to driver updates that involve updates from 2+ vendors. So in that vein, I'm  always wary of the types of 'overlays' of functionality an OEM applies over Windows (or 2nd/2rd party components) that I know will also include updates from Windows/2nd/3rd party. I've long wished for a bulletproof implimentation where Windows and OEM communicate and the update service ONLY always updates with the decided-upon driver and NEVEr updates with a 2nd driver/update. To dated, I have never had a computer that did not push redundant drivers, and they've ALL had issues specifically related to those redundant updates. As for why, I've no idea b/c apparently there should be no conflict.
